ron rudoski 04-22-2012 05:27:37 69.168.144.143 Report to Moderator	HI- lost my power steering on a 1963 2010 JD> Have 2200 lbs pressure to my remote hydraulics, but only 100 lbs to the power steering. Our first thoughts were the power steering motor in front of rad, and valving on the steering column or the mail hydraulic block under the steering column. All three check out OK so assume it is the actual hyd. pump? Am told there is a selector valve in the actual pump. Can anyone give m,e sound advice on this and if repairs are available if it is the pump. Thanks , Ron [Reply]   [No Email]

Pump was oK in all aspects, and spring behind the plate also OK. We pulled the spring and plunger out, and ther are two orifices in the plunger, a large one and smaller one. The smaller one had about an inch long piece of silicone driven into it and caught on both sides in the spring. Also a couple more small pieces of silicone in where we removed the parts. Everything else looks good, and definitely the silicone is foreign, and will advise when we get it back together. Have to order some O rings so will be about a week before we know for sure. Again thank you, and as matter of interest, the service manager at the local JD dealership didnt know that the part you told me about even existed. I replaced the bolts with some all thread about 2" long to make it easier to get the assembly back in, there isn't a lot of room to work in.. [Reply]  [No Email]

As mentioned, the small piston behind that plate had a piece of silicone forced through it by the hydraulic pressure, plugging the orifice. Cleaned it, checked for more silicone, and did find a couple tiny pieces (dont know how it got past the filter) and "presto" power steering restored. Would suggest if you have hydraulic pressure , this is the place to look first. Could of saved about 8 hours of labor if I had used this site first. Not in the pumps. Remove the round cover on the right side of the bell housing above the foot rest. Behind the line that supplies the power steering pump oil is a three bolt cover. Behind it is the shuttle and a spring. The spring is NLA from JD. I had to make one from a stock length of spring of similar size and diam. so far has worked for 6 months.. their was a change in the design in early production. One has a round cap that sticks out and the other one is a flat triangle cover. They will not inter change, been their. PS the pump WILL come out with out splitting the tractor if you need to replace it, but with 2200 lbs pressure I doubt that its the pump. You can check the JD web site to see the diagrams. I assume a spring broke inside the pump as the 3pt hitch works, but that was always alittle weak. The hose outlets were weak too, so I assume it was a weak spring that eventually broke. Also most 2010's, in particular diesels have been scraped. There is likely some info in the factory service manual at 1-800-522-7448. Here is a link to the JD web page parts section where a look at the PS internals and part #'s can be had. The PS unit and hydraulic pump appear to have been used only on the 2010.
