1st and foremost sleeve removal does not involve the use of a hammer/sledge.

I made my own puller out of scrap and a piece of one inch threaded rod. You don't need a precise fit of the disc until you have broken it loose. I used a very heavy piece for breaking them loose, then put in a piece that I cut and ground into nearly a circle to bring it the rest of the way out.

You really should have or use a special dedicated tool to pull the sleeves. You could try the welding trick, but unless you are a good welder and have confidence in your abilities, you risk burning through the sleeve and damaging the engine block.

If they are like a 354 Perkins you are going to need a 20 ton hydraulic puller

Some people run a couple of beads of weld down the sleeve-let it cool and they will come out. you have to be very careful not to burn through. personally I press them out in a hydraulic press with a plate machined like a bushing driver.you can use this same plate, a piece of 6 in pipe and a piece of all thread rod to pull them out. Not rocket science-just a few simple homemade tools, but I do own a machine shop.I put a new set in a Farmall 300 yesterday. Took about an hour.
