Am I right in reading this that if I use a diode for cut out, that I am safe from ruining my generator by "solder slinging" and all and that those persistant stories are pure unadulterated bull cr@p?

By the way what happened to the 10 ohm forward resistance you quoted for the diode? At 11amps plus the junction, that would be 0.7 + (11 X 10) = 110.7 volts.

Now that might stress the generator! But we know that your 10 ohms is total fiction.

Go measure the forward resistance of any diode.Many diode packages are marked .7 volt drop.You dont know much about diodes, they generate a lot of heat because of the voltage drop.

I have a Ford generator you can look at.It does have solder melted and burnt armature wires from running with a loose battery cable.A diode has a .7 volt drop across it.7.3 and .7 adds up to 8 volts.This is the danger point for old 11 amp generators.The armatures are wound with a #17 wire.Ford recommened no more than a .2 volt drop across a cut out so you want to use a diode that has 4x that amount.

This question always comes up for 9N/2N generator/cut out installations and the same regulation that worked for the cut out still works for the diode, i.e., the HI/LO adjuster moving the 3rd brush.........3rd brush adjust on Allis Wd, of the original post, does same job.

OK, now my question: what is a "tickle switch" as far as "regulation" is concerned? How does it work to regulate?

tickle switch would be 'emanual' regulation.

IE, a high / low charge knob on the dash, with a higher and lower value resistor for biasing the field. also.. some tractors had lamp switches that also either jumped in a smaller value resistor in line with the field, vs a large static one, or jumped the ressistor out completely, to get higher charge when lamps are on... my allis G has this setup.. a circuit genny, cutout, and 1 resistor that gets bypassed when lamps on.

crude.. but just like the 3rd brush / adjuster jobs.. works, only using a 2 brush a circuit genny and various resistors and switches.

the diode just replaces the cutout. it doesn't do ANYthing vs regulation. whatever method of regulation it has still needs to be in place.. IE.. tickle switches and whatnot.. etc.

I had a 38 Ford that had a rheostat on the dash that let you adjust the charge rate from the drivers seat.It had a South Wind gas heater.The glo plug drew a lot of current to light to lite the gas and shut off when the combustion got hot enough.You could turn the generator to full out put at night and turn it down in day time.This would work fine on Ford tractors with a 3 brush generators.The rheostat was 3 ohms 25 watt.

I actually like the 3 brush jobs.. not hard to convert to using a regulator either... if you wanted to.. etc..
