I have a 1960"s case 530ck diesel backhoe. The power steering just stopped working while i was driving it. I dont see any leaks. The steering wheel turns round and round but the wheels dont move. It almost appears that they are trying as you can see a nudge when you turn the wheel. Trying to isolate the problem to either the pump, valve or steering gear box, cylinders?? Is there an easy way to rule of any of these? |

the answer would be "never". I didnt know the power steering had a filter. Is it located inside the unit or somewhere else. Thank you.

OK I pulled the housing and the filter is in bad shape, pretty much falling apart. I did see a few small metal shavings at the bottom of the housing. Do you know where I can get the pump rebuilt or parts for it? I have the filter from Napa but if that doesnt work then I may have to get work on it. Thanks for the advise.

I was thinking the filter was restricting the pump suction and you might get by with just a replacement. I haven't had to source parts for mine other than seals but I believe it is an Eaton pump that was in common use in automotive and equipment applications at the time. Check with a local rebuilder. Metal chips in the reservoir is not a good sign.

I ended up getting the pump checked by a mechanic and the pump was good at 1700 psi. The problem turned out to be a blown right cylinder so I am having it fixed. I also changed the filter in the pump which was a real mess and falling apart. Thanks for your help on this.
