I emptied the transmission for fixing and while the rear end sits empty, I noticed there used to be a light brownish colored coating put on the inside walls of the transmission. That stuff if coming off easily and I think it was also getting diluted with the gear oil. Should I remove the remaining stuff and put another coating? and what kind of "paint" was that? Thanks in advance |

Thanks guys. I"m waiting for the local supplier to give me a price on Glyptal. I will clean it good and re-evaluate. I know oil is not seeping out of the casting. Rust is a concern though.

Probably take a couple of hundred years for cast to rust through. Differential gears sitting in water in the bottom of the housing for several years is another thing, but Glyptal won't help that -- only oil changes.

It was used to prevent seepage through new cast. If it wasn't seeping out before you tore it down, it is very doubtful if it will seep now. Just wipe the oil out and leave it alone -- my opinion. I've done 3 transmissions that way.

The paint that is used is the same paint they use in electric motors. It is heat resistant and oil resistant. It would be best if you remove what you can and try to locate the original paint, The cast should be covered to prevent rust. The condesation that developes in the gear boxes will cause the bare cast to rust.

Another reason for the paint was to trap any remaining casting sand that might still be stuck to the housing, otherwise vibration and repeated heat / cool cycles could loosen sand that would find it's way into bearings and gears.
