Im working on a 14 hp kohler. I have the manuel and the parts to assemble. But the pics in the book are not very clear. The engine does not have balance gears in it. can anyone offer a idea on how to make this easier for me. Im wanting to know about the cam and crank timing alignment. |

They all had balance gears but they have a nasty habit of self destucting especialy when the govenor has slipped and the engine exceeds 3600 rpm. The Kohler is so sturdy it usually does not put put a hole in block.

The balance gears are usually left out on engine repair if the tool is not avaible. The timing of the cam is easy the crank mark is on the tooth and the cam mark is located at the the bottom between 2 teeth, when placed properly they will line up. Ignition is determined by the push rod due to the enging being timed or 180 degrees out. I Generally put a chalk mark on the flywheel and on outside of the shroud makes the timing lite easier to use. The timing of gears came from Chiltons Small Engine Repair manuel. Goog luck.

I have been on the kohler site and it tells me that there are no files for the k321. When i look on the command motors they all have balance gears. Im not sure if they are different.

You can go to Kohler's web site and down load both the operator's and the service manual. It's a big PDF file, but the pictures and diagrams are very clear. Jim.
