My wife inheirited her fathers Farmall M and I made a promise to her that I would restore it. It was getting hot so I cleaned the motor, removed the rust and opened up a hole in the gasket. Pulled the head and the gasket has two blow out spots at the cooper seals in the gasket. i also found that it has step head pistons and a 450 head which im told is a trick pullers use to get more compression?

My question is, is there a special head gasket kit I need to order? I dont know if its been bored and this site has two kits for sale and im unsure which to go with, ones for an M w/C248 gas and the other is for a 450 w/C281 & M, im hoping someone can help with the confusion?

thank you very much, Anthony

I have similar set up Most M's have had the larger c281 cylinder kits put in at overhaul I have a 450 LP head on mine with the stock 281 gasket My head was surfaced and the block was confirmed flat using a known straight edge and feeler guage I removed head studs and cleaned studs and holes lightly oiled studs and holes and installed to spec.(use double nut not pipe wrench)install head I use liberal amounts of copper coat lube threds and washers torque head according to sequence 20ft.lb. at a time till torque spec is achieved warm up motor and re torque This works for me. the secret is flat surfaces are a must and proper torque procedure good luck Ed
