Long 445 Transmission Shifter Spins

Just bought a used Long 445 with a front end loader. Bought it on an auction because I thought it was going to be just like my Father-in-laws White, but there are some subtle differences. The biggest difference is with the transmission. It is the 6 speed with the single shifter as opposed to the 8 speed with the separate shifter for the hi/lo range. I have the shift pattern figured out, but the hardest part is that the shifter spins in a 360 degree rotation, which makes it hard to position the shifter to catch a specific gear. My father-in-law seems to think that it is supposed to be this way, but I think something is loose, broken, or missing to hold the shifter in place.

Anyone ever experienced something like this?

Is this something that can be repaired, or is it supposed to be this way? Do I need to replace the shifter or transmission cover? I havent pulled the cover yet because I didnt want to crack the case open until I was certain that there is in fact something to fix.

The stick will come off when you remove the top plate. Put the transmission in neutral between the
high and low gear ranges if you decide to pull the plate. If the stick is rounded that may be your
problem. I added some weld to one many years ago. It was not spinning but sometimes would slide
out of one of the shifting rails which would cause it to be locked into 2 gears. I'd have to remove
the cover and re-align the rails so it could shift. I may be able to find a pic that will help.

Note the flat edges on the shifter.
