I have just bought a love tractor and need some help figguring out just what it is. It has the love logo crest in front of the radiator cap. Colors look to be red frame and gray hood and fenders. Now the hard part,it has a flathead ford V8 engine,a ford rear axle and power steering that looks like it was made for the tractor and not homemade. Where would I look for model or serial numbers? Thanks Flat Top

The only thing that is certain is that there were never two identical LOVE tractors that came off of the line at the factory. There are so many variations due to the "use what we have" policy that Jabez Love employed. During the war, there were a number of "tractors" built with parts supplied by the person wanting a tractor.
I met someone that actually worked in the factory in Eau Claire, Michigan and have several b&w photos taken in the factory. I have a 1950 rowcrop and Paul Zoschke has a 1937, 1939 and a 1954 orchard models. The rowcrops are harder to find. I know of 15 and although they are similiar, none of them are exactly the same.
If interested in pictures or details, feel free to e-mail.

Nice site I hadn't seen before, altho hadn't dug very deeply on Love or Friday.
Couldn't get the Hill or "magazine" articles to come up; the Lockner piece left out that he and Love (accounts differ as to who, or who first) got that 60-65 mph speed by adding a two-speed rear to the Chrysler Cptn running gear.
Don't recall seeing Love's first name as Jabez, either, but could be I've just forgotten.

You"ll want to Google Jacob Love. He was a small tractor "builder" that produced a number of machines, maybe even one at a time, out of "stock" (whatever handy??) components, including some of the Chrysler Cptn running gear CO-OP descendants.
("Small meaning low productionm not small in size tractors).
If I remember correctly (mislaid my notes) Dave Friday was son-in-law, and they worked together before Dave began building some himself???
Really fascinating people, you"ll enjoy the history.
