This has been a 2 plus year problem and im stil having trouble. I have a 57 Super 88 Diesel that runs out of fuel at full throttle. Just this morning i was able to get a fuel gauge on to it and see what the pressures are on it. I put the bleeder bolt for the secondary fuel filter into into a turn lathe and drilled a hole down the center of it. Then welded a 1/4 in pipe coupler to the bolt head and installed a pressure gauge. At idle it will build up to about 1.2 pounds of pressure. At full throttle i lose almost all my pressure. If i hand pump it with the prime lever i can build about 3.5 pounds. With the motor off it takes about 10 seconds to lose my pressure. I have rebuilt the fuel pump with a kit from Korves oliver. Two different mechanics have laid eyes on the pump and neither could see any excessive wear on it. I feel and can see no wear on the lobe that runs the pump. All the fuel lines have new gaskets in them. I can drain the fuel tank with a hose in about 5 minutes and have also replaced the fuel shutoff(it was broke and needed it). It makes no difference with the fuel cap on or off. The injector pump has the little orifice in it that comes off the head for a return. Should i be looking at the fuel pump again or do you think its in the injector pump and returning too much fuel? The gaining pressure at idle has me a little stumped. Any thoughts on where i should be looking? If anybody wants to call and ask questions, please do. I have my cell on all the time and always answer if i hear it. 507-213-7175. Thanks. |

| The fuel has a place to go through the system back to the tank, so you can't build or hold preasure that way. Have someone hold their finger over the return fitting at the top of injector pump. You should get near 10 psi and hold it too. Had similar problem like yours on a tractor i seldom used and could not find the problem.Later i had to remove the tank and other stuff,when it was all back together it was fixed. |

| One thing I forgot to tell you or ask you, were there new check valves & springs in the kit. If the little springs are broke they do not pump too well. |

| Are you sure the camshaft is engaging the pump lever; and does the pump lever have a good return spring?? If the cam lobe is missing or not sufficiently eccentric, the transfer pump will not work properly. |

I put an electric fuel pump on my Super88, and took the manual one off. I made a flat piece to cover the hole. I like it better, it's easier to bleed the system out after changing filters. |
