I am finishing up an Oliver 770 tractor restoration. The PTO driveshaft had worn splines, so I purchased a new long shaft and rebuilt the clutch pack with new discs. Yesterday, I spend multiple hours trying to install the long shaft. It would go in all the way except for the last 3/4". It goes thru hydraulic pump just fine. When shaft gets to what I assume is the PTO hub at flywheel, I can rotate the shaft and "feel" like the splines start to engage. It will go about a 1/4 inch in and then stops. Very frustrating!! We had another 770 apart and tried the new shaft in it, the shaft slid all the way in on the first try (so the new shaft is good, right?) So what"s causing the shaft to not go in? Tractor is assembled and ready to start except for for, hoping I don"t have to tear down again!

Thanks for everyones help. You guys were right, the gear in the hydraulic pump had the splines the wrong way. 30 minutes later the pto shaft slid right in. I did check the shop manual and it does not specifically mention the splines but says to put it in exactly as it was. Guess I learned my lesson!! Now a question on the pto lever. Even with new discs it does seem to snap in nice. I need to remove shims to decrease the travel of the lever so it snaps it tighter, right?

The amount of lever travel should not change when you remove shims. Only the force required to snap it in and out will change.

Did you rebuild the hydraulic pump, by any chance?

Yes, hydraulic pump was rebuilt with new bearings and seals. Pump has three bolts and dowel pin, no way to install it wrong, right??

I think there is an offset to the splines inside the pump drive gear, if you have it facing the wrong way (and it will fit either way), the shaft will not go all the way in. Somebody else will chime in if I am wrong.

Thanks. I will go check. So the splines in the pump sleeve should be towards the front of the tractor when installed correctly, right?

ollie, loosen the pto housing a little then slide the shaft in, then retighten the housing. the pto housing and the rear end housing are probably out of alignment. hope this helps, chuck

I did have the PTO housing off but I have the bolts a little loose so I can wiggle the housing. Its hard to see but I think the bearing is not quite to the housing when the shaft won't go any further.
