The 1850 I have in a pile in the shed was leaking oil out the bottom of the steering unit under the radiator, and I figured I'd fix it while it was apart. I got a new quad ring and put in it to stop the leak. Now I'm wondering, there shouldn't be any oil in the center, because it is pushed from each end. Is this right? If there is oil in the center part, it has to be leaking around the piston end, or am I over thinking this. Just thinking I should get a seal kit for the steering unit and go all the way thru it. It drove alright before, just leaked oil out the bottom. Thanks, Chris |

| | The cylinder on the front post has designed leakage to allow fluid to get to the rack and pinion gears. When you had it apart you should have noticed check valves in each end of the cylinder. They are there to allow fluid that is in the center area to flow back into the return side depending upon which way you are turning. You should add fluid to the center when you put it back together. Since the 1850 is a open center system the prussure is low when not in use. A 55 series with the closed center system will always have system pressure on both sides of the cylinder. The cylinder does not have the check valves. Because of the the designed leakage you need the return hose back to the cooling system. Plug the cap hose fitting and you will blow the cap off the cylinder. |

| It msy or may not. If it has been converted to hydrostatic steering it does. If it has the original power steering unit (has a solid shaft between the unit and the steering wheel) it will not. However there is also a seal in the bottom of the unit |

| It is normal to have fluid in the center of the steering cylinder on these tractors. The pinion gear requires lubrication. The cylinder center should be half filled before you put the cap back on. |

| OK, it needs some oil in there. It was leaking a whole lot more than that, the whole front of motor and around the steering unit was caked with dirt and oil. I needed to check and add hyd oil regularly. Chris |

| That is normal for a bad quad ring. The new quad ring should seal it so that it doesn't leak a drop. |

| Does an 1961 1800gas have the same setup? I noticed my narrow front tires were getting some hydraulic oil on the inside of them the other day. If so, how hard to fix? Thanks Reaver |
