Looking to purchase either a 1550 or a 1650 Oliver. Did the 1550 diesel use a Waukesha engine? Are these 2 tractors dependable and more valuable? Thanks in advance

I had a 1550 diesel, and it was a good tractor- but the spur gear transmission was kind of a pain. If you had the tractor in any kind of a bind at all, you had to pull the hydro-power into low (freewheeling) to get transmission out of gear. It was especially unhandy when using the loader.

The 1550 is a heck of a nice little tractor, but kinda hard to find in a diesel version. Big difference between the 2 is that the 1550 has a spur gear transmission like your 88 while the 1650 has a helical gear transmission. 1650 diesel will probably be a little easier to find.

For grading, mowing, snow plowing, and from time to time maybe some field work, is there a better tractor to get higher then a 1550? I usually have had a super 55 and an 88 but I am going to sell the 88 and get a tractor with a 3 point I can use for show and for work. Thanks

See if you can find a late model 1650 with the hydral shift and direct injection. A very good tractor- ours has about 10000 hours

What are you going to use the tractor for? I would go for a direct injection 1650. Better on fuel.

You did not say if you have a gas or diesel 88. However in this day and age no doubt it has 3.750 bore sleeves & pistons in it. So to me the horsepower of a decent 88 and a 1550 will probably be closed enough you would not notice any change.

Re: Oliver 1550 Engine in reply to Central VA. Oliver, 02-08-2010 14:13:37
Both the 1650 an 1550 were Oliver/Waukesha engines. The early 1650 and all 1550 diesels were Precombustion chamber engines and later 1650 diesels were direct injection.
Early 1650's and all 1550's offered optional Hydra-power drive (2-speed auxiliary), while later 1650's offered the Over/under hydraul shift (3 speed auxiliary).
All 1550's had 4 main bearing crankshafts and the diesel 1650's had seven mains.
The 1550 used a sliding spur gear transmission, while the 1650's had helical gears.
Both have a real good reputation...

The 1550 is harder to shift and has the old style 770 engine.
