My 550 is back together and running well. The pto problems are fixed. Now just a few leaks to contend with and we should be ready to rake hay. I need to replace the pto shaft seal at the rear of the tractor. Usually I can get seals locally. Does anyone have a current seal number?

Thanks for the seal number. I'll get one before I tear into it. Hopefully it is a seal issue and not the "O" ring. That one sounds like work! Now a rebuild of the steering cylinders and the fuel shut-off valve and I should be leak free. I'm still not sure exactly how to fix the fuel shut off valve either. When I took it apart the "O" rings or whatever they used to be were only a blob of goo. Not really sure what size they should be or where they actually go on the shaft. I think we could use some adjusting on the carb also--maybe a rebuild. We'll see once we run a tank or two of good gas through it. I have to put this one aside again and move to brakes on the '47 Ford truck. My project list is extensive.

If it is the same as a Super 55 and has a single speed PTO, the seal is a CR 23646. It is about 3 1/8" OD and about 2 3/8" ID. You can change it by removing the sway chain ends and the other 4 bolts that attach it to the rear housing. be sure to drain the trans oil first. A single speed set up is hollow where the splined shaft goes in the back. If you are leaking oil from inside the hollow shaft, an o-ring is leaking where the solid (forward) part of the shaft couples to the rear (hollow) section. Fixing that requires removing the entire PTO shaft. I can help with that if you need me to. Go to our website and check the in progress page to see my Oliver Super 55 project.

The 1550 was available with either a single or a dual speed PTO. You need to tell us which one you have as the procedure is different for each one.

Hello J. single speed 540 PTO. it is the seal on output shaft leaking and i was hoping an easy fix would be to just pull seal out back and push in new. reading in I&T manual it sounds like complete disasembaly and reassembaly is required. is easy fix possible and if not is there a kit with all gaskets and seal needed when disassembl ing complete. like to have on hand before pulling it apart. thanks in advance. ROCKO

That's a 550 J. The only number I'd have would be the original old Oliver number.
