I have an oliver 55o and when i am blowing snow the engine dies out and I was wondering if there is a possibility that the govenor might not be working. Is this possible or do these old babies even have one

Wayne,

I blow snow with a 72-inch blower on my 550. 81 inch is pretty big. I know that if I hog into a lot of snow (which is common here east of Lake Ontario) the rpms will slow down and I just step on the clutch or take it out of gear and let the chute clear the snow.

Another thing is not to take too much snow at once with the blower. Use R1 and not R2 and take smaller bites if possible.

The governor is probably ok. You are just overworking the engine with that big of a blower and it is harder to keep up the rps with a lot of snow.

this is not like its running out of gas. it just gradually dies out and if you put the clutch in it starts to rev up again. I don't know but what the blower may be to big for the tractor, the blower is an 81 inch ber-vac and it is pretty big but it still is the same size as the wheel spread on the tractor. I just thought that as the load from the blower increased the governor should help to increase the RPM of the tractor? maybe I am just out to lunch in my way of thinking

Hi there Wayne
Perhaps the fuel line / filter is partially plugged.
Is the snow blower the only time you would run at a higher RPM over a prolonged period of time. My problem was at the tank, Wouldn't be able to run anything more than a idle.

If the governor was bad the engine would most likely race up to a high RPM.

so how do you tell if and when the governor is cutting in. I was out the other day after about two inches of pure fluffy powder and if you backed up in R1 you could stall the tractor out.
I dont expect bthis old girl to move snow like an 80 horsepower unit but I believe something is wrong.
