I have been trying to start a Super 188 rebuilt engine for my sawmill using the IT manual. The FP timing mark mark procedure will not work. I went back and pulled out the #1 energy cell plug and pulled #1 up on compression stroke. I found a timing mark EXH on the flywheel. I reset the injector pump to this mark and the engine started. Does the 188 have different specs than the 88? This engine was never used in a tractor, always a stationary power plant. |

Take a look at the timing marks on the flywheel Find TDC. Now bribg #1 up on compression stroke and watch the valves on #6. When they go to valve overlap check to see where your TDC mark is. It should be close to the pointer. You flywheel may be put on wrong. They can be forced on in the wrong position/ Questions? J.

I have tried several different methods. I have no TDC mark on this flywheel. Before I removed the pump from the engine prior to rebuilding I could not line up the FP flywheel mark to anything on the pump. The engine runs find now timed to the EXH mark.

When the keyway in the front pully is perfectly strait up the tdc mark should be at the pointer. Most likly the flywheel is on wrong.

Thank you, Larry. I have been trying to find another way to find TDC. The IT manual states the flywheel can only go on one way. This is incorrect. When I had the head and flywheel removed, I should have checked for TDC on #1 before installing the flywheel. The engine runs fine now timed to the EXH mark and not the FP.

This Super 188D was never used in a tractor. It was set up as a stationary power plant from Oliver with a Rockford PTO. The flywheel is different. I use the engine to power my sawmill.
