I have a 1550D that has to have ether to start in any weather.

I was told by Tom at O'Brien County Implement that some people put a 1955 starter on to spin it faster.

I was told by some mechanic in Missouri that if the 1550 valves were ground and seated and the tappets adjusted just right it would be hard starting. I have set the tappets.

I have a water heater in it but haven't tried it yet. Won't start in my heated shop without ether, though. Thoughts?

I agree had valves and seats put in my 1755 and it will start any weather with no ether.

The 310 in a 1755 is a direct injection engine, unlike the indirect injection 232 in a 1550, isn"t it?

Not saying you aren"t right, just wondering if it applies to a different engine. I"m green as grass on the 1550 diesel.

The spec for the intake valves on your 1550 is a maximum of .015. If they ground the valves and seats I know the recession is out of spec. Also 1550's had seats in the intake valves from the factory. I would have a good machine shop get the intake valves set to the correct recession,then have them measure the intake valve stem height and set the exhaust valves to the same stem height since there is no published dimension for exhaust valve recession. Have you checked the starting circuit with a good voltmeter?

Checking over the starting system is a place to start. It can make or break those tractors. A high torque gear reduction starter, good group 31 batteries, and 2/0 cables usually them a completely different ride.

When you look at the roof of the combustion chamber notice how much of the roof area is intake and exhaust valves.  Grind the valves faces and the valve "sinks" further into the roof.  Grind the valve seat and it sinks further.  Valve depth (some engines valve projects)in the cylinder head measurement is important in any diesel engine.  Now your compression ratio has dropped several points and it won't start.

If every thing is up to specs., Only solution is new valves and installation of valve seats to the correct dimensions.
