Hey guys, I have 1555 diesel with 100 hours on a total engine overhaul. The injection pump and the injectors were rebuilt.
The engine does not use any oil.
The problem is there seems to be a fair amount of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and I like a clean running diesel so how can I clean it up?

Sounds to me like most of your problems are caused by too little compression and engine not warming up to burn all the fuel. Can you get a 45 - 50 Horse Power load on it and work it for a couple of days?

I just read all these and I just checked my book as well. Pump timing is listed at 2 degrees after top dead center just like 88 diesel said. 180 degrees while working is on the low side. I would like to see it closer to 200 degrees. I also agree with Don, unless you have a HUGE manure spreader it is not loaded enough. Also no doubt you took the exhaust manifold off to check the smoke. Do they all quit at the same time. What did you do on the overhaul? New sleeves and pistons and what size? valves just ground or was the valve recession corrected. If you ground the valves and the seats and did nothing else to them most likely your recession is too much and you lost more compression pressure than what you think.

Yeah this engine will NOT run if set at 2 ATDC.
I tried 2 BTDC next and it started and ran ok.
Next I tried 4 BTDC and it ran perfectly but I did have to back the automatic advance off a little. I did two overhauls on it because the first overhaul kit was crap I had 2 sleeves crack.
FYI DONT BUY A BLOCKMASTER OVERHAUL KIT.
The next overhaul kit looked like a better quality OH kit. Sleeves and pistons are standard size. We had a Oliver mechanic look at the cylinder head and he said the valves were recessed a lot but we decided to put it back on anyway. It does start harder.

Some may feel differently, but I wouldn't really think pulling chopper wagons would be the best way to break in a diesel. They break in best when worked under a constant heavy load, just not lugged down too hard.

Pulling a plow, or even running a silo blower where the load is more constant would be a little more ideal. Idle time doesn't help much.

My vote would be to find a harder load to put it on, and let it work a little bit.

I was told to run 4 to 5 degrees static timing on an IDI engine. It is set at 4 degrees btdc.

I just checked my book, and it stated for the 1555 diesel 2 degrees ATDC. How does the engine start, I would still go after timing. Is your engine running at a good operating temperature so the rings will seat-in?

The engine will not run if the timing is set at 2 ATDC. The engine starts OK when its 75 degrees outside but if its any colder I have to preheat it a little. And the operating temp is 180 and in my mind that is perfect for this engine.

100 hours? How did you break in the engine?

How is the temperature? Are you working it hard enough to clear it up and seat the rings. :Uses no oil"? You may have enough unburnt fuel in the oil to make up the difference. Have you checked if this problem is with one cylinder all 6 or somewhere in between?

The temp is at 180 degrees. The oil does not smell like diesel fuel. The smoke comes out of all six cylinders.
