12v conversion kit from YT

just received my 12v conversion kit#AKT0004, looks to be a one wire alternator, i have heard that one wire systems can drain a battery slowly, whether true or not would anyone recommend a shut off on the battery cable? also, does anyone know the correct fan belt to purchase for this conversion?
thanks dave

I installed one of the one wire kits on a side mount 8n a few months ago and I have no problems with it at all. I used the belt that was on the machine. No problems with the battery draining and I don't use the machine all that much.

I don't your part number at YT, I used 12 Volt Conversion Kit, Side Mount Distributor Part Number 8NL10300ALT

I strongly believe in a master cutoff switch. My 8N would kill the battery after I put the 12 volt on.
The master cutoff switch took care of that.

One of mine is a one wire. Sat all winter and didn't drain the battery and unlike you southern boys us men up here live with on average about 5 months or winter each year.

hutoff is a good plan, because of rodents chewing wiring, potential fire, etc. ALL 10SI alternators have some continuous drain, but a normal 3 wire will tale about 9 years to drain the battery (battery will self-discharge on the shelf before that). The one wire may have two to three times that drain, but is still not a problem. P.S., I have measured those drain currents.

My 2N snow plower came with a one wire alternator on it.
It is the only one wire alternator left on any of my tractors.
It has not caused me any issues so I haven't changed it.
It might get started twice all summer if I need to move it.
Otherwise it sets until oil change before winter gets here.
That's a hard life for the tractor and the battery.
But it hasn't drained the battery to the point of not starting.

Side mounts use the original belt if you have the right pulley.
If you're going to let it set and are worried about discharge, pull
a battery cable off. Cheaper and is only one connection to clean.
Of course it does require a wrench. ;)
