12 volt conversion got smoke

I converted my 8n to 12 volts. Have a toggle switch and push button starter switch. I have a wire that goes from pos. side of bat. to toggle switch then to resistor then on to my coil. First time I flipped toggle switch to on I got some smoke out of the resistor. It is a ceramic resistor. Is this right or have I done something wrong? Also when I crank it over I get a snapping sound like something is arcing but can't see any sparks. Haven't checked for spark at spark plugs yet. I just finished wiring it and wanted to see if it would turn over.

front or side mount dizzy?

if front mount.. what coil you using?

a lil smoke from a new ballast resistor is normal..

post back some details.

I converted my front mount dist 8n to 12 volt sys last nite.. I also got smoke from my new resister. Now looking for a better wiring diagram than the one I got with the kit. Still unsure where both wires from the key switch go. My new coil doesn't fit very snug on the dist either.. Cranked but did not start.. Did not see spark at plug either.
