Topic: 2N Hour Meter

My '44 2N has an hour meter w/the name "John W. Hobbs Corp. Springfield, Ill" on it. Looks like it has not been hooked up for some time. Does anyone have any info on these, such as where do they hook to, and can it be done when the tractor has been switched to 12 volts?

| Thanks guys for all the input! I hooked it to a spare 12V battery & it moved. I think I'll hook it up again & leave it for an hour & see what it registers. This may be easier than I hoped!

| I've added after market hour meters to mowers and tractors. I think my hour meters can operate on voltages from 10v to 80vdc. Not 100% on the 80v, but it a higher voltage than the tractor can produce. My hour meters are about 2 inch diameter. If yours messes up, you can find them on ebay around $10-15. Avoid getting an hour meter that uses a wire wrapped around a spark plug wire. They don't last very long. |

| Something's not right here! All 3 tiny stove bolts mounting it in the dash came right out and the 3 even tinier bolts holding the back on also came out without any damage!
It's 2 wires clearly marked inside as Battery and Ground. They were broken off flush w/the case & looked like one.
My question still is do I hook it to the 12 volt or 6 volt side?

| | if it's a 6v hour meter, and you run it on 12, if it's mechanical.. it will count too fast. running it thru a resistor is dubious as resistors drop voltage based on load. IE.. there is no '6v dropping resistor. ). you COULD build a vreg out of a couple radio shack parts and feed it and be fairly accurate.. or get a 12v meter from napa like I did for my 951 :) |

| soundguy - Sorry about that. Yes, it's electric. I can only see one wire. If that's all, should it hook to the 6 volt side of the resister?
momac - I can't see it well enough to see any markings, so am going to try dismounting it without destroying anything!

| i'd hook it to the switched side of the key.. that when when ignition is on.. meter is running. |

| If you have any problems wiring, use my wiring guide: 1 wire, hook up. 2 wire, screw up. 3 wire, burn up. Mike |

| All our equipment at work had Hobb's meters on them. Should be a 2 wire hook up with two terminals. Should be marked + and -. One for power in and one to ground. If it runs backwards, change hook up. All ours were 12 volt and on the 24V they wired in with a resistor. Power from the key switch or from the oil pressure switch if it had a electrical one. Mike |
