Mike Austin 717 12-22-2012 18:23:36 70.199.231.156 Report to Moderator	today while blading the gravel road with my son my new 9n (new to me)started to cut out and sputter on the way back to the house it died and i cant get it started.i changed the spark plugs thinking maybe i fouled a couple or something.i do not know much about 6v systems but the battery charger says its full but it does not seem to turn over fast enough to start,any help would be greatly appreciated thank you [Reply]   [No Email]

They can be purchased at any good auto or farm supply store. 6V systems don't spin as fast as 12V, nature of the beast. But if tuned right, they'll fire right up. Make sure all the connections on them are spotlessly clean. Loosen (or remove) the starter, pull it back a bit and clean the surfaces in between. Do you have a load tester for your battery? Clear your brain houseing and tomorrow it can work wonders. First thing type 75 tips into the search box on this site,Bruce of Va has put this together and has all the info ya need to trouble shoot most problems.If you follow his procedure you will get your{new} old 9N going.If not these guys here will help ya get her going. Fuel tank breather clogged, just loosen the gascap. Read the round wheel on yer glass filter under the tank, 2-turns for normal operation, 4-turns for access to 1-gal reserve. (which probably has WATER in it) ALWAYS turn yer roundy-wheel OFF so the gas don't drain thru yer carby and cause hydro-lock of yer engine pistons. UNDERSTAND??? 2nd thing, ennytime you have troubles starting yer engine, change yer sparkies.......NO ARGUE!!! You FLOODED yer sparkies and they won't sparkle. Don't throw yer FLOODED sparkies away; clean'n'dry 'em, one-atta-time in HOT running engine and save'um fer the next time. (and there will be a NEXT time) Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". Champion H-10's ain't worth chit. 3rd; pull yer starter motor 8"-screws 1/2-in and wire-brush the H3LL outta the gap. Now re-tighten yer 8"-screws. 4th; keep yer itchy-twitchy fingers off'n them handy-dandy carb tweek-ums. Iff'n you done fiddled with'em, ASK and we'll tell you HOW to re-diddle yer carby. 5th; do NOT try to adjust yer points (0.015") on the weird 4-nipple frontmount dizzy. Ittza 2-bolt, 15-min job to REMOVE the dizzy and change and adjust the points (0.015") on the kitchen table. Just un-snapple yer capple and letter dangle. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts, and install the rotor. Rotate the rotor until the OFF-SET tang drops into the camshaft OFF-SET drive slot. Now tighten the 2-bolts. The OFF-SET drive scheme means you can NOT install outta time. Amazing, eh? When you check, replace, or adjust the points (0.015"), remember to polish the INVISIBLE CORROSION from between the points. Me? I clamp a clean $1-bill between the points and pull. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that. As the boys have reminded you, "clean, brite'n'tite" is the ONLY way to go with 6-volt systems. And yes, the original 6-volt starter motor is SLOOooow. Surprizingly enuff, you can JUMP the 6-volt starter motor with 12-volts from yer BelchFire-V8. ASK how. Use ONLY 'mericum made 0 or 00 (double-ought) thick as yer thumb starter motor cables. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister and 12V advocate [Reply]  [No Email]

I've fouled plenty when I've had trouble starting for other reasons, or when I've stalled somehow. But I can't see that the plugs would have been the initial cause of the problem. Regardless, though, when you're having trouble starting, you'll probably need to clean them (a propane torch does a great job of that--you don't need to buy new ones each time you have a starting problem) or it'll have trouble starting even when you've found/fixed the real problem. -Paul [Reply]  [No Email]

Assuming it's not out of gas, pull the plug out of the bottom of the carb and see if gas will run into a container for a couple of minutes steady. If it does, make sure the gas is clean and put it back in. If it does not, then check the screens for obstruction. There is one on top of the sediment bowl, one in the elbow going into the carb and one on top of the sediment bowl assembly in the tank. Leave that one for last. If you do have good gas flow, do you have a working ammeter? If your ammeter works, what does it do when you crank it? Does it "bounce" when you crank the engine over, or go negative, or nothing at all? Let us know, you'll get lots of help here. [Reply]  [No Email]

soundguy 12-22-2012 18:40:05 184.247.42.95 Report to Moderator	Re: 9n tractor died today and i cant get it started in reply to Mike Austin 717, 12-22-2012 18:23:36   quit changing parts and making guesses and do some real diagnostics... for instance.. when you pulled the plugs.. did they LOOK fouled? now. do you have spark? good spark? if so.. move on to fuel. oftentimes a can of start fluid is a good diagnostic aid. if you have spark and she will run on start fluid.. you know you have a fuel issue. post back after more diagnostics and less guessing and we can help you. ps.. 6v don't turn terribly fast... BUT.. DO make sure all your bat cables and terminals and ground to chassis connection are clean, rust and paint free.. and cables are thick, not wimpy auto 4 ga.. and are not coroded under the insulation.. also sheet metal bat tray connections are usually bad... Also the battery cables on a 6 volt system need to be 0 or 00 cable as in about as big around as your thumb. Next you need to check your spark it need to be a blue/white and jump a 1/4 inch gap at all plug wires. Trouble shoot first parts later. Also pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for a couple minutes catch it to reuse it and also look for water etc in the gas [Reply]  [No Email]
