My timing light shows 20 advanced degrees at all speeds idle to wide open. It starts great, runs strong, pulls any load I hook up, doesn't over heat, doesn't try to run on when I turn off, but as all can see, we have not any changing advance. Should I send $$$ to YT for parts or maybe distributor or just run her and be happy with $$$ that I save? What do you experts think? I mean experts, not just those who print big numbers of opinions. Everyone has opinion, but not all are experts. Thank you experts for helping us not experts. |

Maybe should said, will constant 20 hurt anything? No need to tell me stuck or inspect or won't start (I said it does) as those are clear to anyone. Happy idle too. Just simple yes or no from expert (one who really knows), can any damage be done at always 20 all the time?
Am I clear enough this time?
Manny thanks! |
Unless you are into working your tractor at idle all the time it will not HURT a thang were you are at.... If it will crank and idles good forget about the base timing as long as the total is nailed... it sounds like it izz.... Form one who really knows....

| Jose........fer the 5-nipple sidemount 8N dizzy, it should be 4* at idle (400rpms) and auto-advance 16* for a total of 20* by 1200rpms. Sounds like yer UNDER the PLATE centrifugal advance is STUCK WIDE-OPEN. Time to remove the plate (held in by ring) and "operate" .......Dell |

| | yeah.. deffintely rude.. I agree with the other poster. i know you want a yes no answer.. but .. if it really is advanced all the time.. I would expect harder to start conditions.. and at least a dragging starter eventually. It takes mere moments to visually inspect a mechanical advance. if you are afraisd to do that.. or don't know how.. just ask. Simple inspection / observation won't 'hurt' anyting, even if you chose to leave it that way. Some are telling you that you will use the tractor at full throttle all the time. that may be true. it's not anywaher near true for me except when mowing. the other 50% of the work i do on a tractor is not at max throttle.. your call. |

| Will it hurt well just figure it this way would you want to run your car that way?? As in over the long run it may in fact cause burned valves by the timing being off but that could take many many hour of operation. Your call as it could be as simple as some one using a points hold down bolt that is way to long and that can mess up timing. But as others have said the way your coming at this only serves to make it so people will not want to help you help your self. You get more flys with honey then you do with vinegar |

| Many many people here will help you and Dell did tell you how to check things out. I did tell you what may happen but then it may not happen. Either way it would be a good idea to do as Dell said and make sure what is wrong and also if you do not have it get an I-T FO-4 manual so you have info in hand |

| I thought my NAA was running fine last year, but decided to put new points in it because they were a little burned. While working on the distributor I checked the mechanical advance under the points and found the parts rusty and stuck....it was not advancing. After cleaning and lubricating and installation of new points, I was surprised to find how much smoother the engine runs and the power under heavy loads seems better too. Just a thought for your consideration |

I am far from an expert, but something is wrong. I don't think that it would start that far advanced. Why did you check it? have you tried changing the timing? If it runs good I would leave it as is and sell the timing light. |

| that's what I'm wondering, if the advance is freely moving and working, anbd perhaps theres an issue with the lamp, or reading the lamp.. if it really is starting good, running fine at all rpm ranges and taking up load..e tc.. |
