mgriff543 11-25-2012 19:16:57 69.95.74.132 Report to Moderator	Another way to do this is to pull the brushes out of the holder and then move them out the little windows on the side of the starter. You will have to remove the cover band from around the starter to do this. Next remove the housing on the brush end and be sure to keep track of the paper/ leather washers that may fall off the armature shaft. Resist the urge to smear grease on the bushing, just a little squirt of oil is fine. You can now take the drive end housing/ armature assembly off and give that bushing a little squirt of oil. While you have it apart do some preventative work and wire wheel the mating surfaces between the aluminum end housings and the steel field housing. The corrosion buildup here will give you bad ground connections and drive you to drink if it gets too heavy. You can put the starter together and snug the bolts up with temporary nuts. 1/16th to 1/8th" free play end to end is about right. The armature should spin freely now. Now for the trick for setting the brushes. Make a "S" hook out of coat hanger. One end is big enough to go around your finger and the other end is about a 1/4"radius to grab the back of the brush spring to pull it out of the way while you put the brush in the holder. The hook only needs to be about 3" in overall length so you can rest your left hand on the outside of the starter and keep a firm hold on the brush spring to save your brush placing right fingers from the mouse trap effect.
