So I drug in another mutt 8N today. Dads been looking for one to bush hog with and this one came with a 5' cutter and 6' blade. Its been converted to 12v but currently doesn't run, wiring is a mess. I'll be needing those famous JMOR diagrams.

Serial number 248321, governor has proofmeter attach but wrong dash and no gauge. Got the one piece cast shifter and one hat and one six loop Ferguson wheel. Even has a newer Massey op gauge, kinda cool looking but has to go.

My question concerns a small 3/4"(?) hole in the bell housing right behind the air cleaner close to the battery tray. Haven't been around one with the timing cover, but this can't possibly be for timing. Any ideas???

I'll put some pics up over the holiday.

So I got to work on the n last night and all day today. She sat for two years and was locked up TIGHT. Went ahead and split it to check out the trans and prep for a rebuild...

Sure enough the step up was still in there. Guy probably didn't even know. Got motor freed up(need to replace rings, bearings, sleeves) cleaned ALL day and now I'm waiting on parts.

The Sherman was run by cable and I checked out John smiths site, but still not sure how it works. Im missing the cable but I did see the mechanism that attaches to the actuator(?). I pushed the clutch and pushed/pulled on the only thing I thought would shift it but could not get it to engage. There is a threaded rod maybe 1/4" dia that i assume shift the trans. Any help is appreciated.

I don't mean that in a negative way. Just the fergy wheel and governor are not original. Not to much, been rode hard and put up wet.

Currently at dads shop. He couldn't see in the hole, told him to get piece of tie wire and poke around in the bell housing. Man, hope that step up is still in there I've got big plans for this one. Ill put some pics up over the holiday so you guys can school me up. Found a nos proofmeter and cable for 40 on cl. Think I'll just modify the dash and hook it up.

I'll be rebuilding the carb and rewiring tomorrow to try and get it to fire up. Keep you posted.

Why do you call it a mutt? Serial number 8N248321 would be a front mount distributor. Only side mount distributor tractors had the proofmeter from the factory. The one piece shifter would be original too. The hole in the right side of the bellhousing may be from a Hupp or F&T transmission. It either has one or had one at one time maybe.

I bought an 8N one time that had a hole as you discribed. Owner told me the "fork" in the clutch shaft would turn because it was worn. He would stick a rod in the hole and put it back in place. It was happening so often he elected to get rid of it, to my good fortune. I pulled the tractor apart and welded so feet on the fork and fixed it. Sold the tractor in 2011. Maybe you got it!

My Dad had a dealership drill a round hole in the bellhousing of an 8N to fix a stuck clutch. They just put a rubber plug in it. a small round hole wouldn't affect the strength of the cast.

My bad, obviously check John Smiths site first. Looks like it had a step up at one time. My apologize.

That's why I keep coming back. Don't know everything, and my brain tends to outhink itself.

Hopefully its still in there waiting to be put back to use.

I don't think so. Sherman's were on the left (if sitting on it) and I think it would be to high. Its on the right and up top right below the tray behind the cleaner.

Might just be a farmerized "inspection" port...
