john, ny 11-18-2012 12:08:01 74.108.107.77 Report to Moderator	I have a 48N runs fine for about 5 minutes, misses once, then about 10 seconds later, she stalls out. I"ve checked gas flow at the bottom of the carb, I have good flow (I let about a quart drain out). I also jumped the ignition switch (ran her without a key), she still stalled. I have a healthy spark over a WIDE gap on a test plug, and the front mount coil is cold to the touch. I thought I just fixed the problem by replacing the condenser, it was the only thing I could blame at this point, but I still have the same problem. The really strange thing is that IMMEDIATELY after stalling, I can re-start her right up... I"m talking within 2 seconds of stalling.... then she will run for another 5 minutes or so then stall again….. Can anybody offer any advice please? Thank You [Reply]   [No Email]

Just as a fluke I started jiggling wires while the tractor was running, and the FIRST wire I touched made the tractor want to stall, I moved the wire back she ran like a charm, moved the wire away, wants to stall..... It was the wire to the solenoid that i think comes from the ammeter that came loose in its eyelet, as I tested, the wire came completely out of the eyelet. I pressed on a new one, cleaned all connections, and she has not stalled yet! Thanks again for all your help! [Reply]  [No Email]

Bill Rowles 11-19-2012 00:27:17 76.2.232.2 Report to Moderator	Re: 48 6volt N stalling in reply to john, ny, 11-18-2012 12:08:01   I wonder if there is a particle of dirt/rust in the carb that gets sucked into a jet or other small oriface then drops out after the engine quits/suction stops. I would try a thorough cleaning and blow out internals of carb to see if this could be the gremlin in your N. Dirty/burned/mis-adjusted points can cause odd behavior but I would not expect it to be so repeatable in time between events. [Reply]  [No Email]

Once yer carbie runs outta fuel, guess what??? It DIES. Didja know yer gravity operated gas flow will STOP iff'n the gas vent is CLOGGED and VACUUM will STOP yer carbie from gittin' refilled. Try un-capping yer VACUUM CLOGGED gastank and guess what will happen??? Gitta NEW GAS CAP. Problem solved. I just re-re-re tested fuel flow, I sat at the carb waiting for the stall, less than 15 seconds after the stall I had the 7/16 nut off the bottom of the carb, and I had gas running out. I already let about a quart of gas drain out of the bottom 7/16 bolt this morning. How would I test for water? Would draining the carb to a Glass jar be enough to show anything? Put 1/2 cup of the fuel in a glass measuring cup. Add 1/4 cup water. Let the cup stand for a while. The water will settle to the bottom of the cup. If there is more than 1/4 cup at the bottom, the extra was in the fuel to start with. [Reply]  [No Email]

Each time she stalls out, I immediately am able to restart the tractor. When I did test spark yesterday, I had a jump across a 3/16" gap. [Reply]  [No Email]

If I have a small short in the coil, just enough to knock out spark, would that generate enough heat to be felt on the surface of the coil? Maybe the short is on the engine side of the coil and not generating enough heat to be felt. I had a problem with a "new" coil years ago, and resorted to replacing it with the only coil I had on hand, (possibly the original... at least it looks old enough).... I'm wondering if that coil is now shorting out.... but if this is the case, would this short cool down fast enough to immediately restart the tractor? nothing fits! [Reply]  [No Email]

Usually shorts cause heat and components usually don"t cool down that fast. I recently replaced a new ignition switch with less than one hour run time on it due to losing power at the coil. How it dies can be telling as well. In my experience fuel issues can cause a "floating away" before dying where electrical issues are more of a "key off" dying. Follow your evidence. Hope this helps.
