Rear axel shaft nut.8N . How tight should it be? Don't want to ruin the bearings. Have new snap rings on order. Almost lost my wheel while cutting brush. Didn't notice my snap ring had jumped out of it's track.
Thanks

The big nut attaches the hub to the axle. It has no relation to or effect upon the bearings or any other component. It's just a bolt on hub.

The spring clip goes in one of the holes on the nut and it should grab one of the grooves in the axle. Good luck lining them up

Hey Minnesota,

If you weigh 200 and you need a 2 foot pipe to get 400 torque pounds, does that mean since I weigh 100, I need a 4 foot pipe?

what part(s) react the 400 lb ft torque?

Is it best to loosen the nut before removing the rear wheel?

thought it might be better to loosen the nut a 1/2 turn before removing the wheel, so the torque could be reacted by the tire and not internal parts in the differential and transmission. Would jack up axle and support axle before removing wheel.
400 ft-lb is a lot of torque.

Bulldozer.......leave the frickin' NUT on the axle. Do NOT remove the rear ag-bar tire as you will TIP the tractor over on its side. Understand??? ........respectfully, the amazed Dell

400 ft/lbs as was said.

I may be stating the obvious here, but it is a good idea to re-check them every so often.

Especially if they have been off recently.

Marty,
Another version to torque the 2 inch nut to 400 ft/lbs is to get your 2 inch socket with appropriate handle which you can slide a pipe over as an extension. Let us say I/you weigh 200 pounds, with a two foot extension lever from the nut will give me/you 400 ft pounds torque. There is always a combination to do this no matter what you weigh. Hope this helps! Word of caution, do not let is slip off the nut!!

Marty.........the BIG axle NUT of the 8N is supposed to be torqued to 400ft/lbs. Thatza BIG GRUNT onna 4-ft cheater bar. You can NOT over tighten yer 2"-NUT. The threaded axle end will bottom out first. To check, rock yer ag-bar tire sidewize and watch yer BIG WASHER fer movement. Iff'n you have movement, you will need to renew yer slotted hub. Iff'n yer sphincterly challenged, rent a 600ft/lb torque wrench. ........tightjaws Dell
