Any of You use those handy dandy jump start boxes? Bought one or two on ebay--had just enough juice to spin the starter slow--so slow bendix didn"t engage--400 amp-I know is low end but it ought to spin and engage the starter and start an N..Good ones are pricey..Anyone had personal experience with these??

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Only if that "N" has a magneto or a fairly good battery.

Still need battery voltage to power the ignition. :)

I have a 300AH jump box I have been using now for 6-7 years and have no problem starting my truck or tractors with it.

Thanks-good info--I had wondered if the 400 amp was just too small.

them poosters are junk.. cheaper to get a cheap car battery at walmart and a cheap set of jump cables and make yer own bat cable ends.

cut off one set of the jump cables.. add ends.. add to battery.. most batteries come with a handle.. clip other ends of bat jumpers to the handley.. and there you have a GREAT jumper box...

A local car dealership, back in the 80's, had a deep cycle battery on a 2 wheel dolley in a marine type batt box and small charger including jumper cables bolted to battery. Worked great, seems like someone was always leaving a light on and running batteries down. Worked great.

Never had good luck with those booster paks, wouldn't hold a charge after a short while. Had two and threw both away. The battery on an old riding mower sounds like a good idea.

I have a couple for powering a laptop and stuff

during power outages.

used em for jumping a few times, turn slow, but work.

For jumping, I usually just buy a big car battery with the built-in carry handle,

and hard wire some cables to it and leave it on a tender. cheaper

when I needed a battery for a big Wheel Horse, but no $$

I wired two 6v batteries in series and mounted them

on a platform on the back (good ballast :D )

made a good jumper cart, lotsa reserve

All batteries are a bad deal, especially if only occasional use. If in a business where use is nearly every day then a jump pack may work out, but if only now & then when one of a half dozen engines won't start, then it probably won't work either. One of your daily-drivers & GOOD cables will better serve you. Just experience talking, though.

I have 2. 1 about 3-4 yrs old has started my Ns and many a car/truck well. I usually jump the starter. It's easier. It had the charger go bad so I charge it thru the clamps instead. The other is 1 yr old and it seems to be a weaker battery. Has safety factors but I don't think that is why. They are different manufacturers. I find them cheaper than a good set of cables and easier to deal with. I always seem to get them loaned and not returned or back in bad shape. They may not start a diesel or big block with a dead battery but can boost a weak one enuff to get er cranked. Just have to remember to keep it charged.

I've only had one that lasted for a reasonable time, and I bought it as a discontinued model.

The junk yard near me uses an old riding mower with a car battery strapped to the back.

They just drive it over to the vehicle they need to jump and then let the mower

charge it back up. They say its cheaper than a booster and lasts longer.
