trying to figure out why my chainsaw won't stay running and i was hoping somebody here has the expertise or maybe has run into this before.

i bought it used and it wouldn't run more than 10-20 seconds. the fuel line was rotted and split and letting in air so i replaced it and that fixed it for a while. i haven't torn it down very far, but i'm wondering if it has a condensor that is getting hot? i fully dis-assembled and cleaned the carb, air, and fuel filters.

i bought a manual and adjusted the carb per factory specs, and it will run perfectly fine for maybe 15-20 minutes or more, until it's good and hot, then it loses power and dies.

i have to fully choke it, then go to half choke, and it will start back up and run for a minute and then die again. it bogs down quickly and dies as soon as you give it any throttle at all. if i start it at half choke it will stay running.

i've heard of adjusting chainsaw carbs until they "four stroke" and then back off a bit to get it right, what does that mean? thanks for any help, matt

Look inside the fuel tank there is a small filter on the end of the fuel line going to the carb - fish it out with something with a hook on the end and check - might be clogged they are cheap to replace or do what I do and back flush them with carb cleaner - re-attach and push back inside.

Bad spark plug can mimic a gas problem.

I just got my 029 running, the filter in the tank looked spotless, took it out, it was hard to blow air through. 5.50 for a new filter, easy to blow air through, installed it and it ran great.

Had an 029 that acted like that, Needed a carb kit. It was really cheap. There is a little rubber diaphram in there that goes back and does this.

the only markings i can find on the carb is wt 215, and that doesn't seem to show up on any of the lists i'm finding online. may just have to take it to the stihl dealer here locally and see if they have one.

how big of a job are the crank seals? i saw on another forum said it was time for a new saw, but i hate to buy new things when i can fix them.

Tn8n,Take the muffler off like Wilber suggested,it could be choked up with carbon.Just unbolt it and start it it with it off and see how it runs.

sounds like you have a crank seal out. You need to do a vac and pressure test on the crankcase. That is the only way yo tell what the real issue is.

I like to start simple, how is air filter and gas filter that is in the gas tank. Does it stay running on choke? forestry forum may also help you.

I don't think they have electronic modules in the 026 so your guess sounds good. I have a manual I could check tomorrow but maybe try a chainsaw forum like arborist site or race saws. Old stihl s are still well supported , even in the aftermarket . Check bailys online they carry a lot of stuff for old chainsaws
