I have had good luck planting field peas in August, harvesting them in October/November. This year I have had very good luck! The rain finally came to South GA and I did not have to pull out the sprinklers. These are peas that my Grandfather and Father grew since the 1920's. It is a southern field pea variety, but I have not found any others just like it. They shell out green and cook up brown, and make an outstanding pot liquor. They are not cow peas, not crowders, not pink eyes, not purple hull. One of my older cousins called them Ernest Campbell peas, after my Grandfather, and another local gentleman said they were W.H. Brown peas (his family). I just know that they are good, and I've been keeping this strain going since my Father passed. He told me that they would not bear if they went to vine, but I have been able to let them vine on wire and they make a lot of peas. Otherwise they tend to cover the whole area and wrap up on each other. I will be picking them today.

Here are a few pictures of the few rows I planted in the back yard.

And here is a YouTube video link of a walk in the peas from yesterday:

Yep, they look like beans to me too, but then I never looked at a pea patch when I was in SC.

I grew up on these peas in Albany, GA. I can testify to their good taste, but hated to shell them all afternoon on the back porch!

We put up 35 pounds of the Colossus dry last year.
Only plan to do about 10 pounds this year.

nice pics! i grew some heirloom green beans that a customer of mine gave me one day. it's fun to keep older varieties of plants going. and a lot of time they taste better than the GM stuff you buy nowadays.
