Just read the I&T manual but cannot find the answer
I'm looking for. Does the number on the connecting
rod go toward the camshaft or on the opposite side?
Memory tells me it should be opposite, but want to
make sure.

Thanks.

Opps ! My face is red. I looked at the 8N today and the notches are toward the left side of the tractor. However; the cam is on the right side and not the left. These directions are from the seat. My 8N is a 48 front mount. I do not mknow if it has been worked on.
Hope this helps.
Many Thanks !

On my 8n, the indent for the rod bearings is toward the cam shaft side. I just looked at them today.
I think this agrees with the other comments.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

My wonderful FO manual says, "Replacable shell type" in reference to bearings.
FO 4 says oil squirt holes may be installed front or back.

Also says to drill bearing shells after installation. Must be a very old manual Huh????

Actually on the N engine I don't think it realy matters at all since the rods are the same configuration no matter which way they are installed. It is important that the pistons have the arrow toward the front as the connecting rod pin or piston pin hole is not in the center of the piston but off to one side slightly.

The rod bearing keeper indentations go to the left side of the engine. This is my rule of thumb on all the American made ford tractors. The left side of the engine is on your left if you are sitting in the driver's seat.

We are not talking about a reversed cap. As long as the caps are on in the correct orientation it won't make any diffrence in cranking. Reversing a connecting rod with spray holes on just one side on the crankshaft will simply cause the oil spray to go to the opposite side of the cylinder.

Numbers toward the cam.

Had the same issue when I rebuilt my engine. Usually the crank will let you know; if there on backwards it be a real b**** to crank by hand.

factory numbering towards cam

quote from my old NAA manual:

'Oil squirt holes and numbers stamped on rods should

face toward camshaft side of engine'

I'm more familiar with the 3 cylinder models and on those it does not matter.
Generally though the numbered side goes to the cam.
