Got my kit to replace seals and brake pads on my 8N - the biggest socket I could find in my kit was 1 inch - too small - guess the rear wheel nuts are just a bit bigger than this? Are they 1 1/4 inch?

I had new rear tires put on by a guy who came over with his truck and equipment about a year ago now - imagine they were put on with air gun so expecting a tough time to get them off.

Any advice about getting the rear wheels with water in off?

You are allowed to use a tape measure to find the distance across the flats. Be quicker than asking on here and you'd have the right answer too.

Oil in the brake drum means you need new seals and maybe hubs.John Smith's site has good information on fixing seals.

Nuts on my 2N are 1 1/16. I bought a 1/2 drive deep set from HF a few yrs ago. goes from 1/2 to 1 1/4 I believe.

You need a 3/4 drive set on tractors.

Got one from Sears - had a gift card - had to use a breaker bar with a length of pipe added to the end to move those nuts - scared me as it made a loud crack noise when it broke free - I was a bit nervous about getting the rear wheel off but once it came off the studs it was not as heavy as I thought it would be - got everying else off ok but those springs are pretty heavy duty - normally just lever them off with a screwdriver but these look like they might be too much for that - going to get a spring removing tool tomorrow.

The kit I got has the felt seal and replacement springs and adjuster - as well as the brake shoes - assuming this is correct for the earlier 8Ns?

Inside the drum just filled with oil - no wonder not stopping!

Lug nuts are 1 1 1/16".

One man can remove/install loaded N series wheels/tires. I always remove/install mine without help.

Keep the assembly upright DO NOT allow it to tilt over-center. If it does, let it go and get out of the way. Make sure that there is plenty of room around the tractor to enable you to get out of the way if you make a mistake.

Two men can easily restore a fallen wheel/tire assembly to vertical.

"Two men can easily restore a fallen wheel/tire assembly to vertical."

Or one man and a shop crane or boom pole (if you have a second tractor handy). Been there, done that.

I sure wish there was a HF closer than the nearest one is - probably a 60 mile round trip - probably would be a good customer for them!

BE careful what you wish for. I have a Harbor Freight about 20 minutes from me. I absolutely can't go in there for one thing without finding 4 other things I can not possibly live without.

I try not to go there too often.

I had a 3/4 inch socket set sent from Harbor Freight in California to Iowa for around $10.00.
Cheaper than I could drive the 60 mile round trip to the Quad Cities.

if your tool set only goes to 1" time to hit HF and grab a larger 1/2" set or a 3/4 set.. they can be had cheap. if no air gun.. get one as well.. they make stuck bolt / nut removal much easier.. I've impacted nuts off that would ahve twisted off on dead pulls.

On mine they're an inch and a 16th.

As far as advice, if you don't have a good air impact wrench, loosen them

slightly while the tire is still on the ground.

Same with the center hub nut. Make sure you remove the retaining clip and break

it loose with the tire on the ground. It is torqued to 400 ft/lbs.

After that, jack it up so the tire is JUST off the ground, take the lug nuts off

and you and your helper can move the tire away safely and carefully.

John Smith's site has a great picture break down of how to do the seals and

brakes, as well as parts if you need them.
