I just traded a generator I wasn't using for a Cub ZTR with a Briggs intek v-twin, but the motor is blown. Guy said his brother was mowing and "oil just went everywhere". Well, naturally that'll happen when you put a rod through the block. I can find the block online for about 250, but my question is can it be welded? Its cast aluminum but a guy I work with can work miracles with a TIG. I don't want to dump a bunch into it so i may part it and buy a new engine if its scrap. -Jeff [Reply]   [No Email]

Our aluminum fab shop uses 4043 rod and the tech says he has welded cast all the time; several small engines and even a Cummins diesel slave cylinder bracket. I'm going to clean it up tonight and cut some plate on our lasers to patch the hole. New rods are about $50 ea plus bearings, but i have a set out of an opposed twin with the same stroke and bore, figured it can't hurt...already a boat anchor. [Reply]  [No Email]

Dad has the exact same mower and hasn't had the first sign of trouble. We tore it down today and it was pretty bad. Both rods let go, took a silver dollar chunk out of the case, nicked a cam lobe (think I can get it out), but crank is fine. Man, that thing EXPLODED inside, talk about rapid disassembly. We weld 3003 H-14 alum plate at work all the time. If i can get the block patched, I'll through some rods and bearings at it and see what happens. In the mean time I'm shopping around. No luck yet on used but ill check around home when i get back. Seems a 22HP Intek is a little new for cheap parts. [Reply]  [No Email]

I broke some aluminum from another old blown engine and Tig ed it together with my wire welder and have been running it for several years now. I did have the extra parts such as rods etc in another engine or it would not have been practicle to do it. Buy a new engine would be my suggestion. I have one of those Zero turn Cub Cadets and I love it. It has about 1000 hours on it and I did a ring job on it a couple of years ago after it began to use oil and foul plugs. Other than that I've replaced the belts several times and cut a lot of grass. I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Zane [Reply]  [No Email]

I just recently purchased a 6.5 hp horizontal shaft motor for $100 for my very old Troy built tiller. It runs and works great and the price can not be beat. [Reply]  [No Email]

There are a lot of those vertical shaft motors out there used and for a fair price. Many of these box store cheap mowers have engines that out live the mower. Unless it's mongo big engine you should almost be able to get a running engine for not much more than $250. [Reply]  [No Email]
