First off, I grew up in the projects (east St. Paul, MN) the first part of my life. Later we moved to the country. My wife and I were urban pastors for a long time in MN, now we own property in Missouri. I soon realized my push mower would not cut the mustard in lawn care! Bought a Husquvarna lawn tractor but have more land than it can handle but it does a fine finish work.

Recently, we purchased a 1941 Ford 9N for $1350. The seller started the tractor and it ran very rough. Come to find out one spark plug wire was completely off and another was nearly severed and it still ran! When dropped off, the guy who was selling it for a friend, (owner 87 yrs old) said I would need to adjust the breaks.

Okay, the ONLY tractor I ever drove was the Husqvarna lawn tractor we recently purchased for the yard around the house. So the front tire was low and I was going to change the plugs and wires, I decide to slowly drive the tractor in front of the garage. No problem...except I can't stop it! That slight panic and slow motion feeling that I am about to hit my garage door and what is Vickie going to say came in a split second. My son is watching. I am standing on the breaks and just before I hit the garage, I think: "Hey, why not hit the clucth"...too late. They don't make garage doors the way they used to. But that's what sledge hammers are for! My son said, "Mom's gonna be mad!"

I change the plug and wires, minor servicing and it almost purrs, slight miss. I adjusted the breaks, been immersing myself in the FO-4 manual and on-line forums and can maneuver it around. The one thing I need to work on is the hydraulic touch control lever. It will not stay in place.

Now I need a bush hog and box blade and I am golden! Think I'm gonna paint it Red, White, and Blue (respectively). We will see. Vickie says I can do what I want as long as I paint it blue. :)

Howdy Neighbor, Welcome to Missouri and the 'N' Board.
You live just down the road from me. I live west of Bolivar. Just out side of Fair Play.
Nice looking tractor. All mine are a nice autumn brown color. If all you had to do to fix the brakes was to adjust them you got out lucky. Usually them are soaked in oil. I'm needing take mine apart for a cleaning and new seals now.
If you don't mine working on them from time to time the 'N's can make you a good tractor. Good luck with it. If you ever need some help just give me a holler.

Hey it worked!

Good looking tractor!

Sorry about the garage door, but probably a good thing you had the bumper on there.

Protects sheet metal and radiators.

Can not see them well but front hubs look wrong on it also looks like they are the small center type not the correct larger center type. By the way up in Eldon Missouri this week end they are having a tractor show

I know and there was one off of 54 between Camdenton and Osage! I had a mind to turn around and go but I had plans. I will take another picture of the tractor. I wee what you are saying about the front. This could be a Johny Cash tractor!

Well if a 9N it is painted wrong but that is common. I have at least one light that would be correct for it up here south of Camdenton. By the way my dad was born and raised up in the Menesaka area of MN and he was also a preacher. My e-mail is always open on the forums also and is easy to access if you use the classic view

I believe they painted to sell. When I cleaned it, the paint came off most of the engine. I am sure they were "rust proofing" and making it more "sellable". I am pleased with it. Don't have as much time as I would like working on it.

I don't see a picture B_Dodge, keep trying. If you're using modern view

after you browse and upload you have to click the "Continue" button.

Congratulations on the tractor!

The fact that they're already 70+/- years old is a testament to just how great they are!

You mentioned the FO-4, and you may want to pick up an owners' manual too.

There's good information in there on how to hook things up, what the controls

are supposed to do, how to check and fill the fluids, etc.

I almost wish I'd never bought an N. I love them so much I had to build a new

barn to keep them last year!

Great guys on this forum. A wealth of knowledge. Glad you found it!

Something nobody mentioned yet, if you step on the brakes the governor will automatically add throttle enough to override you applying the brakes.

You have to push the clutch in when you wanna stop !!!

And DEFINITELY get an ORC if you're gonna use a brush hog...The inertia from that spinning blade will backfeed through your transmission and keep pushing you...Quite a surprise the first time it happens to you !!!

Good luck !

Reading the serial number, I deduced it was built in 1941. I do not have the number off hand but will recheck.

You are just up the road! Live outside of Lebanon.

B-Dodge,

Just a few hints that you probably already know.

1. Be sure to get an override clutch for that future bushhog. Otherwise, that bushhog will push your tractor even with the clutch pushed in.

2. I believe your 9N is like my TO20 Ferguson - the lever for you lift is basically an up or down choice, with no adjustment in-between. There is a guy on the Ferguson forum that sells an attachment for your lever that will allow you to adjust the height of the lift and hold it there.

3. There is a lot of safety do"s and dont"s on the 2N,9N,8N forum on this site. I would advise any novice to spend a lot of reading time there.

Thank you for the advice! I googled 9N and got this site. So glad I did. Forgot to mention my son saying, "OOOH, mom's gonna be mad at you!" She wasn't, just glad I was safe.

I am going to soak up as much knowledge as possible.

Sorry about the garage door. Glad you weren't hurt. If you have the FO4 manual you know you can adjust the left brake so that it engages when you push down on the clutch pedal. 9N does not have position control but you can control the height of the mower with either limit chains or by using Zane Sherman position control device (that's what I use). link below.
