I have a 1948 8N front mount that carries about 60psi of oil pressure.
If I work it really hard plowing, it may come down to 40psi.
I've changed the gauge to the Jubilee type (80psi) as it pegged the 8N type.
I swapped the gauge out again with the one on my Jubilee. Both read high on the 8N and normal on the Jube.
Just seems strange to me. This is not a recently rebuilt engine either.
It's my old skeeter fogger. Blows blue smoke out the tail pipe all the time.
Any ideas would be appreciated. |

Your cold pressure tells you the relief valve is opening at a minimum of 23 PSI. It is almost certainly not the reason the pressure drops to 5 PSI when the oil warms up. If the engine was rebuilt recently something was missed or done incorrectly. Your symptoms are classic signs of excessive oil clearances somewhere inside the engine. A higher viscosity oil will not do much for that - maybe get you a 2-3 PSI bump.

What weight oil are you using? I run 40# in my Ford Industrial 6 cyl just to get higher oil pressure when the engine is hot. I don't rev up the engine until the oil pressure drops some.

Mike, I do not know what weight oil is in the engine. The seller moved to Montana!!! Not really, he has a place in the mountains and will be back in late September. I will call him when he returns and figure out what is in it. I may use 30 or 10w 30 through the winter as it is parked in a garage. Any other thoughts are appreciated! Mr. T. Minnesota

Low oil pressure is seldom caused by a defective relief spring. If you get a higher pressure at startup and the pressure drops when the oil warms up it is not the spring. The spring limits the maximum oil pressure the system will develop - it doesn't put a floor under it.

TOH, Thanks for the info. The cold reading is about 23-25 psi. It drops to about 5 psi when hot. I still may check the spring. When I changed the spring on a 2N the spring had worn badly where the spring comes in contact with the plunger's side. I was surprised! If it would have snapped I believe it would have been trouble. I may also change to a higher viscosity oil-30 weight. Any thoughts are welcome! Mr. T. Minnesota

Hobo, Could you tell me more about the two different types of relief springs. Have an 8N just overhauled and wonder if the seller changed that spring. The pressure seems to run lower than expected for all that was done to the engine. Thanks, Mr. T. Minnesota
