I have an old Troy built pony rototiller. The original engine blew several years ago and the B&S replacement engine blew this summer. I don't want to invest much into this relic so I purchased a Predator 6.5 hp 212cc OHV horizontal shaft gas air cooled engine from Harbor Freight for $99 with the coupon. I had to modify the mounting bracket to make it fit but it was close. Has anyone purchased one of these engines and if so do they have any comments on how well they run or last?

John you do know that these air cooled engines are designed to run at wide open throttle under load. If you run em slower they can over heat cause enough air isn't being forced around the engine. That over heating will cause early failure.

I was looking at these at Harbor Freight also need an engine for my Bob Cat trencher. Original motor was a 7Hp with a 1" shaft all that I saw was 3/4" but I could get a shaft adapter 3/4" to 1" re-mounting should be no problem

The worst case scenario is I may have to shim up the engine to match shaft height but it will not have to be exact for chain drive.

Need to pull of the existing engine so I can measure it up first.

I can get the Robin EY28 to run but I have no air filter or Governor linkage and have not been able to locate any parts because the se# for engine has been rubbed off.

The original motor and the replacement had a second shaft to drive the reverse. The motor I purchased from HF does not have this second shaft so I now do not have a reverse. I purchased the tiller many years ago from a friend that did not take care of it. He had it for 5+ years and I don't think he ever changed the oil. The original engine lasted me 20 years. The instructions for the replacement B&S said to run the motor at full rpm but I modified the governor so it ran a little slower the full speed. At full rpm it sounded like it was going to blow. I think it was undersized and needed the full rpm to get enough horse power to run the tiller. This new HF motor run good at a reasonable rpm and has the power to run the tiller. I just hope it last.

NOXJohn.
I'll bet you can buy 5 HF motors and have change left over before you can buy one Briggs with counter rotating shafts.

I too have a pony. Bought it used. I may be doing what you are doing if the 5 hp Briggs on my pony doesn't hold up.

NOXJohn,
Didn't the original briggs for your pony have two output shafts. One was counter rotating for the reverse?

So what is causing the 1st 2 engines to blow? Mine is over 40 years old & is still the original engine. I put new piston & rings in it once. If you don't take care of them , they won't last long.

The HF motor had a 3/4" keyed shaft just like the original. It was not exactly the same length so I had to modify the mounting plate.

Most of the Chinese motors are exact clones of the Honda GX line, arguably the best small engines ever made. At first there were some pretty sketchy clones around , but these days the better Chinese GX clones are getting pretty close to real Honda in quality. The HF Predators appear to be among the better ones, and the price is hard to beat.

Let me clarify my initial response. My Pony tiller has forward and reverse. The motor has two shafts with pulleys. One forward, one reverse.Does your new motor have both shafts?
