Did compression test other morning and got 80,94,75,89 (1,2,4,3).
Per suggestion added ATF to each hole and waited a day. New numbers. 80, 90, 85, 99 (1,2,4,3)

So number 1&2 about the same while 3&4 jump up 10 psi.
What does it mean?

A few things to check and be 100% sure of. #1 that you have the plug wires all hooked to the correct cylinders. Firing order is 1,2,4,3 and the cylinders from the radiator back are 1,2,3,4 If you have the plug wires on wrong it will not run no matter what. Also did you just put a little ATF in the cylinder or did you fill them all the way up. Just a little is not enough because you could have valves that are not closing up as tight as they should due to carbon etc. These N series tractor are one you can love to hate because of some of the odd head aches they cause a person

Since engine won't run, those numbers are engine (& oil) cold compression numbers, which are fairly decent, considering. I would start looking elsewhere for the problem as engine should start with those numbers. Might try another day or two with ATF soak, or pull start it since spark and fuel seem to be good. I'd also put new plugs in it -AL 437s.

That's the firing order.

Just test it 1-2-3-4.

It might mean that the rings were sticking & the ATF loosened them up.

But you need to start over anyway because you still do not have the info you need.

Minimum acceptable pressure is 90 lbs w/ the lowest pressure reading w/in 75% of the highest reading. Run the engine to operating temp, turn it off, remove all 4 plugs, remove the breather hose & make sure the choke and throttle are both open. Crank it at least 5 compression strokes or until the gauge stops moving. Write down the first compression reading (that is the valves seating) then write down the reading after 5 strokes or when it stops increasing. You should have two numbers for each cylinder. Then, add a tablespoon of oil to each cylinder & repeat the process, but you only need the final reading for each cylinder. Write down the results & post back for help figuring out what it all means.

" Minimun acceptable pressure". They WILL RUN with less compression. Most of the folk on this Forum have bought/used tractors in less than pristine condition that ran. Many reports of "It's fogging the mosquitos every time I run it, fine in the summer, but a waste plowin' snow". So read Bruce's '50 tips' and get to work.

Was testing 1234, just had seen it listed as 1243 in multiple places. So I posted that way. Currently engine won't run. See post from earlier this weekend. Trying to diagnose 3 important things: compression fuel & spark.

When I posted compression numbers earlier, it was suggested to add ATF and retest. Did that and not sure what it means.

You may have been over anxious. If you 'add ATF' to your cylinders, you should/must wait 24-72 hrs, in order for the detergent properties to have any effect. HTH

Doug.......it don't matter whether you test 1,2,4,3 ...or... 1,2,3,4, ...or... 4,3,2,1 ...just rite yer numbers down so you don't gittem mixed up. Remember, it take at least 5-rumpas to measure a cylinder's compression. Ford specs: 90psi min (dry). Many times a 2nd test of the same cylinder (WET) will evaluate the ring wear condition and valve wear condition. Normally, add about 1-oz of engine oil down the sparkie hole and take the compression again. Engine in good condition, oil will up the compression about 20psi. Very worn engine will up compression 30-40psi with oil. Would it surprize you to learn a new rebuilt engine should test about 125psi wet ...or... dry.
