Good afternoon all...My problem is on my 1952 8n. It won"t lift. I have removed the side cover, and I notice when I move the p.c. lever in the quadrant, the lever inside that actuates the valves, is only moving about an inch at the most

Good Morning! Thank you Dell, HCook and Bruce. I do have about 45 years of mechanics experience, mostly auto. So, yes, I would say that I have covered all the obvious basics. However, I may have stretched the actual distance of movement. When the Position Control Lever is moved from the bottom to the top, the lever inside, I said moved about an inch, does not move that far, I guess I have to reach in and "feel" if the rocker is moving. Perhaps the exhaust valve is sticking?? I will get to the Barn later today, and report my findings.........Thank you, Don

" Perhaps the exhaust valve is sticking?? "

Yea, that's what I said last night: "Chances are you have a stuck intake or exhaust valve."

I also asked " Is it in position or draft control?"

That could make a difference in the diagnostics.

Take a look at the pics in the link JMOR posted regarding the range of motion of the lever.

Lastly, the handle on the right side of the seat that you are using to control the lift is the 'hydraulic touch control lever', commonly called the 'touch control lever'. You're going to confuse folks trying to help you by calling it the 'position control lever'.

The little lever under the seat is the position control lever, also commonly (and incorrectly) called the draft control lever.

First of all....My apologize to you Bruce, and everyone else that has read my "Post". I guess after owning the tractor for 5 years, it's time that I learn the "Proper" names of the controls, so I can intern get the information I need. For some reason I have always called the "Position Control Lever" the "Draft Control"..I am sorry, my bad. Thank you for the "link", I will reach in there and see if I can feel what is happening. Again, thank you Bruce

Don........you do know that the hydraulic lift pump is operated by the PTO shifter lever behind yer left heel, don't you??? It should be intuitively obvious that the engine must be running to run the PTO pump ...but... stompin' on the clutch pedal stops the PTO from gittin its drive thru the tranny gears. Meaning iff'n the 6-spline PTO shaft is NOT turning, guess what??? NO pumpin' the pump; and NO liftin' the 3-point. ........respectfully, Dell

That's about all it's supposed to move. So as long as it's connected to the pump, that's not your problem.

Lets start w/ the simple stuff.

Got enough fluid in it?

Is the fluid milky looking?

Is it in position or draft control?

Is the pto lever engaged?

Chances are you have a stuck intake or exhaust valve.

When is the last time you dropped the pump for a good cleaning?

Sounds like it might be time.
