Hey yall im a student in my high school auto shop class and a new project thats rolling in next tuesday is a ford 8N, not sure what year but i volunteered to take charge of it...the owner of the tractor is another teacher in our school and i had a little chat with him about what he wants done to it..he said that it "doesn't run" but he wanted the engine torn down and to replace what ever needs replaced in there (bearings, pistons, rings, head milled, etc...he must have a lot of money) to make it run like new. The reason im posting is because this is the first 8N let alone first Ford tractor iv ever gotten into and nobody in the shop has any experience with rebuilding tractors except me (farmall h) so i was wondering generally what are the first steps you guys would take in tearing down this old piece of history??.....thanks in advance, Drew

Cool project to work on most of what I learned on this site was by asking questions.

like someone else said on this Forum long ago these tractors were designed by Henry Ford with only what was needed to make them work and had to be easy to fix because the man working on it was used to working a mule team to plow with.

Good luck and be sure to post back.

Welcome to the YT site.

Hi Drew,
If the owner wants it rebuilt and has the dough to do it then don't ask why. Just do it and get the learning.
I rebuilt my first engine in AG class as a senior in HS. That was 42 years ago and the experience I gained has helped me a LOT over the years.
It was an Allis Chalmers 'B'.
I'm real glad to see a young fellow like yourself doing the learning and preparing himself to carry on a great tradition of wrenching.
If you need help don't be afraid to ask.
This is a fine, helpful board.

Not to burst your bubble but you should first figure what is wrong from the owner then try to get the tractor running. After you know that the tractor is sound then decide what needs to be replaced. It is easier to fix a runner than to throw all the money you can at one that won't run again.

What I like about the N is it is as basic as basic gets.Simple L-block, very dependable. If you take someone who knows nothing about how and where the internal combustion engine came to be this is where they can cut their teeth on the simplicity of this tractor and it workings. Get a owners manuel and a I&T Manuel they are a must. Most of all have fun! they are much cheaper then therapy.

Check out the "Tractor Parts" button on the top left or this pages. It will take you to this sites parts store. Select Ford & New Holland then select 8N as the model and then go to Miscellaneous. Near the bottom of the page you will find a rebuild DVD for $24. Ford 9N, 2N and 8N are all very similar. This DVD should cover all of them. It would be a good investment for anyone rebuilding a Ford N engine without an experienced tutor around. You should also get a FO-4 manual which this site sells. And of course post here if you run into problems or have questions.

Be careful milling that head. If you mill it to much you will have clearance problem and will then need to cut part of the head back out so the valves do not hit the head. Also if your doing new piston it would be a good idea to replace the sleeves

You can get a new head for $250 or so depending on where you get it so it's not worth messing with it much if it's warped or cracked. Jim

this is a good start for you. the 8n is real close to the 9n. Start with getting and reading the FO-4 service and parts manuals.

Good luck
