I am hoping you can help my dad out - my information is based on what he has given me.The Pto initally did not stay engaged so for a breif period he does the bungee cord thing. Works OK. he was using it and the pto just stopped turning and no hydraulics. takes the PTO out( notices while taking it out that when he turns it 3 point lifts). Inspects the shaft - looks good. Notices snap ring is gone puts one on and reinstalls. Takes it out and mower works good for 2 rounds and then PTO stops/ not hydraulics. Can you get us headed in the right direction? I really appreciate any and all help. |

| I had read it, but I have also read in prior discussions that there was an older type seal that occasionally caused problems, but there was a newer version that was much improved..., just wondering if anyone knew which one was on this assembly. Thanks, Jim |

| | the only seal that has been available for some time is what is installed. PS.. the older seal worked fine.. 99% of seal problems I see are operator error of instalation. soundguy |

| | as you may have guessed , and would know if there was a manual, the pto runs the hyds in that tractor. when the pto was disengaging it was experience thrust play and walking out of engagement.. due to a damaged bearing and/or that snap ring..possibly even a damaged bearing carrier. if a correct snap ring was put in, and it still pops out.. then the bearing carrier is damaged. get a new shaft assembly and be ahead of the curve with a new bearing and seal all in one assembly.. vs buying a new bearing carrier, AND seal, AND bearing, AND wear ring and reusing your old shaft.. which may have a mushroomed inner end and chewed spline by now anyway. hopefully the sliding coupler has not been dammaged.. too much. new pto shaft asy is less than 120$ i believe.. and is available from the parts site here.. ps.. they sell MANUALS here too... |

| | Soundguy sez : "when the pto was disengaging it was experience thrust play and walking out of engagement.. due to a damaged bearing and/or that snap ring..possibly even a damaged bearing carrier." So pretty much that's the only thing that would be causing disengagement ? I have the same thing happening on my 850 and my NAA... Buy the correct assemblies for both of 'em and my problems are over ? |

| | ps.. if the shifter mechanism is damaged and the fork is not pushing the sliding collar into full engagement, and / or the detent is bad, it could also cause some probs.. as well as if the sliding coupler is damaged.. or the splines on the end of the pto shaft are damaged. many times the splines can twist.. or the inner end will mushroom from thrust play constantly beating it back and forth. again.. pull and inspect.. then remedy. |

| | if the bearings are worn, it will allow play. if the snap rings are damaged or popepd out, it will allow play. if the bearing carrier is damages so that the snap rings cannot seat or stay seated.. it will allow play. remove the assy's and inspect, repair or replace ( parts or assy ), as needed. remember on a 53+ that the shaft goes thru a seal seperating hyds and diffy, so it is necescary to drain the hyds and diffy sumps prior to pulling the shafts.. and when you reinstall.. be carefull to not damage the seal as you stab the pto shaft back thru. |
