...after discing, headed up the hill and gave it some gas. Got to the top and the throttle is stuck running wide open. Thought it would be an easy fix, but even when I manually try to throttle down, it still is running at max rpms. I turn off the key to shut it down quickly each time, but I"m perplexed on what to do to correct this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

If ya keep hamering on that throttle rod end, or the plate, you will end up bending the rod and plate.

Once ya get the carb off the "N"......As SouNdguy said,...look down the throttle bore and see if one or Both of the screws are broken or missing. that would be my guess!!!

If that is the case, the throttle plate is cocked inside the bore. and will NOT release the rod until you straighten the plate.

Get something with a small hook on the end, to try to pull the plate up and straight, while keeping a slight pressure on the rod bail.

If the rod or plate gets bent...(Only made of brass), then you will have to buy a New plate and rod!!!

so.. this on a cat dozer or what?

telling us what kind of tractor you have helps us tell you what to do.

if this is an N.. the throttle handle runs the governor.. and governor runs the carb butterfly.

check to make sure a stick or somehting hasn't stuck the linkages.. or a rod bent.. etc..

otherwise if you just need to limp her hom, disconnect the gov to carb butterfly and manuall sett he carb and drive her home with no governor

simple eh?

Okay, I checked for a stick, bent linkage, etc-nothing there. I disconneceted the gov too carb and manually set the carb-no luck, it still is running at wide open throttle. I was not far from home, so I "feathered" the choke to get it in the barn, but still extremely high idle.

It seems like the butterfly is stuck in the open position-even tried lightly tapping on it with a hammer, but still stuck

it's only a rod with a flap on it.. put some strenght in it. it may also be that the flap has partially come off leaving it lodged and nearly straight piped.

running with choke hosed the cyls down with fuel..

get the carb off and look down the throat at the flapper.. therin lies your problem

Soundguy-thanks for taking some time with mw-I really appreciate it.
I removed the carb and the flapper seems fine-opens and closes when I do it manually. It seems to ba attached and functioning properly.

I looked at at, as I said earlier, and the flapper seemed to be working as advertised. But after re-reading your reply and looking at it a little closer, what appeared to be rivets holding the flapper on were actually screws that had worn out so bad that the head of the screws would let the flapper slip up and stay open. I found a shaft and screws on an old one at the local tractor place, bought it for $5 and put it on. Works like a champ-thanks to advice from guys like you. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. You don't know how much time that saved me. Thanks again for your sage advice.

glad to have helped.

i've seen choke flappers and throttle butterfiles do some funny things.. so it was at least a good close guess to suggest to you.

glad you got it fixed.

I know what you mean.
The other day someone knocked on the door and asked me if I ever thought of the "hereafter". I said yeah, every time I go into a room, I think, "Now what did I come in here after?"
