I have a 48-49 8n with a front mount distributor and a TSX-33 carb. This tractor has been sitting for about 12 years. I replaced the head gasket, spark plugs, rebuilt the carb with the smaller kit(as opposed to a complete kit)and replaced the points. The Problem: Engine does not even seem to make an attempt to start when turned over. What I have done: I have removed the hood and rigged up a small gas tank so I can work/observe without the hood. Two cinder blocks have been placed on the clutch to keep it permanently disengaged. I have set the points as described in the IT F04 shop manual. After several failed attempts to start I took out all the plugs, plugged them into the boots and grounded them up against the head. All the plugs seemed to spark very well and in the correct order 1-2-4-3. I even opened up one plug to about 3/16 of an inch and it still sparked consistently. I then smashed my thumb as hard as I could against the spark plug hole of #4 The cylinder compression always blew my thumb off the hole and mist/vapor shot out. I also observed the spark plug (still grounded to the head)fire at the same moment the compression blew my finger off the hole. I then put the plugs back in and sprayed a small amount of starter fluid in the carburetor air intake. No Change I have cleaned out the the carb twice(once before I even tried to start it, and once after) and the second time I noticed that the main jet threads in the carb body were stripped. The jet will just fall out in your hand when you turn the bottom half of the carb upside down. My other observation is that when you crank the engine several times, little droplets of a dirty tan fluid begins to build up at the carb air intake. I think it is water, but I don"t know where it could be from unless my head gasket is allowing in water from the water jacket. However, this all said I would still think it would fire on some starter fluid. Suggestions appreciated. bmrtractor |

| If it sat that long I would first fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit a few days. Sitting that long rings stick and while it will blow your finger off that still can be way to low on the compression to run. Hard and Oliver 60 engine like that and after ATF and a few days it fired right up |

| | I discovered a few years ago that I could get 100% success w/ a carb rebuild on an N by hiring out the work. After rebuilding a half dozen N carbs, all it took was one failure to convince me that the price my local rebuild shop charged was worth it. Try a local rebuild shop or Gary in MT. If Gary is booked up, these guys do 'mail order' work; give them a call to get a quote & shipping info. And, they also do brakes, starters, generators, water pumps, clutches, etc. Automotive Manufacturers Incorporated 2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220 (804) 321-6861 |
