Woodchuck 08-23-2012 08:16:41 169.226.69.75 Report to Moderator	Got a used Hercules ROPS for my 2N. PO uninstalled it to make his a show tractor. My wife said I better get one if I wanted to use mine since a friend and neighbor, 50 year veteran of skidding logs, was reciently killed on his. I told her I wanted to test it but she wasn't excited about the idea. :wink: $400 didn't seem to bad. To me a acronymn is is short cut! Seeing how I have been educated well beyond my intelligence level in Safety the main thing I have found is when you put on all of your PPE personal protective equipment you can no longer do your job efficiently and safety dose not recognized the trained professional By the way ROPS is Roll over protection for those who don't know. Yup, you gotta wear the belt and you gotta look out for low hanging limbs. Hope to never test it. The ROPS has a sticker on the side listing the ISO standards with which it complies. The bolts that hold it to the trumpets aren't standard; they have rounded shoulders where the head and the shaft of the bolt meet. [Reply]  [No Email]

My newer tractor which has a folding ROPs has been folded since day 1 because of the catching on stuff issue Especially since you are now used to using that tractor in the woods without one. For now, until you get used to it, you could mount one of those flexible bike whips/flag on the front bumper at the same height as the ROPs. All I can do is hope I remember to duck and pray the jungle gym FEL holds. Since I do many things while standing, a seat belt is not an option. If one flips while using anything with a driveshaft..... I remember a farmer south of my hometown getting killed not long ago while skidding some logs. [Reply]  [No Email]

What happens if you hit a low hanging limb with it? Most of my tractoring is done in and around trees with a lot of limbs and branches. I keep thinking if I had one of those I would catch it on a big limb and flip the tractor backwards. Yeah it would prevent the tractor from going all the way over but what if you had a plow, disc, mower or other tool on the three point? It would crush the top link and drive the implement right into your back. And if you are like some guys who wear a seat belt on their tractor you'd have no chance to get out of the seat and out of the way. Considering all the options and all the hazards of driving a tractor I would rather Not have one of those on my tractor - at least at this point in life when I'm still spry enough to jump. I suppose I could simply avoid areas where there are overhead obstructions but that would severely limit what I could do with my tractor. I'm just musing here so please don't take offense. When the Army install ROPS in the pre hummer jeep we had a guy killed when he rolled one. Wasn't wearing the seatbelt and the rollbar squashed his head. For ROPS to work right you gotta have something to keep you inside the area of the ROPS frame work. What I want to know is I see 2 metal straps going trowd the front of the tractor from the ROPS.
