My 1951 8N 3 pt lift has started to lock in the up postition. I was working it pretty hard with a heavy (555 lbs)box scraper. Sometimes when I move the quadrant control lever down, nothing happens, then eventually it will all of a sudden release and lower. Happens intermittenly. When it locks up, the control lever moves freely, doesn"t have the normal friction/pressure that you feel when it works normally. Can"t find the cause/solution doing a search on the forum, but am sure many of you know what the problem is and the cure. Thanks |

| Thanks all of you for the quick responses! Sounds like it's time to replace the hydaulic fluid... and to try to avoid the heavy loads. I must say, I thought I was strething it with the 8N when I got the 6' box scraper instead of the more reasonable 5 footer, but the extra weight really works great leveling a barn site. She pulls it just fine, but it is a load when lifting. Glad to hear it should be solved by clean fluid instead of a rebuild. |

| Clean oil will certainly help, but pulling the drain plug won't get rid of all the dirt. If it were me, I'd drop the pump and give it a good clean out. |

| | Dirty oil. Sticking control valve/s. Don't overload it and it will fix itself. Zane |

| | you can't find the cause cuz you ain't lookin :) open the inspection port.. very likely when it's locked up and you feel less than normal pressure on the 3pt lever.. it's because it is not moving hte valve in the pump.. which you can then test by mving by hand. usualy means dirty gritty oil in a place where there is close tolerance.. :) |

| | Could be a sticky valve on the hydraulic pump. Vito |
