Why clutter the web with another wiring schematic for an 8N Ford tractor? Well, for one thing people ask for them! Some have trouble reading them.

If you are inexperienced, but know you have a Ford 8N front mount distributor tractor and want to convert it to a 12v system. This sketch may help you.

If you are technically savvy, you don’t need this sketch.

This sketch illustrates a basic wiring conversion for a specific tractor and in no way covers all situations and goals.

Just go ahead and rewire the whole tractor! Sometime starting over is better than trying to figure out how someone else wired it.

Good Luck!

Dell I gotta agree. My new to me 8N with a one wire (i didn't do it) charges at idle at start up.

I assume you know that is a picture of a 6 volt battery??????????

You don't have to over rev the cold engine to get that one wire to start charging if you have another wire to one of the small spade connectors on the alternatore and use either a press to engage switch on it after the engine is running or a diode in that exciter wire or even a small clearance or instrument light in that same circuit to excite the alternator upon turning on the ignition switch to which that wire would be connected if usine any of the two last mentioned citcuits.

Another thing is he used a wire to the junction block and then a wire to the solenoid and electrically speaking it is the same as if he would have just ran a wire to the solenoid and saved 4 foot of high priced copper

add 2 more wires and a lamp to the diagram and then call it a good one and go.

Shoot a 1 wire can be wired up by a 5 year old you just have one wire to run to the battery side of the solenoid not need for a diagram for that. Even the better 3 wire set up is so easy a child can do it. Bob has posted a picture for years how to do it and the archives are full of them. Just had it posted in the Farmall forum today

whopist.........I'm notta fan of the 1-wire alternator conversion 'cuz you gotta "juice" yer cold engine to about 1800-rpms before the 1-wire alternator self-excites and starts outputtin' at about 17-volts to yer 12V battery. At least you did include the MANDATORY "infamous ballast resistor" required for the modern 12V squarecan coil ........Dell, a 12V advocate for the right reasons, who knows 8-ways to convert to 12V and they all work the fist time

"cuz you gotta "juice" yer cold engine to about 1800-rpms before the 1-wire..."

Dell,
You've been repeating this for years and I'm still wondering why you gotta rev your cold engine.
If there's enough juice in the battery to start the engine there surely is enough to let it idle for a few minutes and warm up before you rev it.
Yes, I understand the advantages to the 3 wire.
I just don't know why you gotta rev it cold.

Doggy........the reason I keep tellin' people they haffta "juice" their engine to 1800-rpms is most people don't run more than 1500-rpms even when warm. So iff'n you don't "juice" yer engine, you will DISCHARGE yer 12V battery and NEVER charge it. Ittza built-in voltage regulator scheme. Once you "juice" yer 1-wire alternator, it will charge at 600-rpms just like the 3-wire alternator with idiot lite. ........Dell, 12V advocate for right reasons

Dell....most 12v conversion kits now come with the small pulley installed on the alternator, and with the small pulley, the one wire alternator excites at about 600 rpm engine speed. No juicing required. don b

Why do you have to juice it cold?

Of you read the instructions that come with most one wire alternators they say right in them that it takes X number of RPM to excite them. I have even seen some that have a sticker on them that says something like it takes 1800 RPM to excite

Hi 8wayDell!

I clearly stated my post was not for you.

At least we now know where your "infamous ballast resistor" resides on this tractor.
