Without tractor running, battery voltage should be a little over 6 volts. With battery running battery voltage should be a little over 7.

Voltage at a little under 6 after using a battery charger. Doesn't go above 6 with tractor running at high rpm's. Thanks.

ground the field.. if ammeter does not show max charge when at about 1500 rpm, then jumper bat to arm and ground field again.

if still showing no charge, shut tractor down, slip belt off, jumper bat to arm and jumper field toground.. genny should spin.. if not.. take to dr.

SouNdguy, have you ever thought about videoing the procedures and putting it on the net? Anyone? It sounds easy when you say it fast, but I only hear slow. Awm frawm Tehaxas. (%^)

i wouldn't even know how to put a video up.. and I doubt i could take one and do the work at the same time.

since it's in print.. just read slow.

belt off

jumper battery hot to armature.

jumper field to ground

genny should motor

How big is the jumper cable? 10 ga or jumper cable size? On the regulator or straight to the genny? A picture is worth a thousand words. I've been watching utube vids on a lot of hands on procedures and find it helps take the guess work and makes it feel like you've done it before. Adds a little confidence. I haven't tried to utube this procedure? Think I will.

looking at it from a logical point of view, you surely don;t need any wire for jumpering that are any bigger than wires already on the genny.

as i said... read slow.

i told you the parts to jumper.

where you actually jumper them makes no difference except on length of wire.

a wire armature is armature wheter it's in the back of the genny.. or up on the vreg tab where it's real hard to get to with a jumper wire.

for practial purposes.. 2 parts connected by a wire are electrically at the same potential....

Soundguy - thanks for your help. Just wanted to show how it is wired up. Just curious why the 2nd post (black) goes to ground also.

that's to ensure that the genny and vreg are operating on a common ground with no resistance between them. a vreg with restace to ground will produce a higher charge voltage... and that is not good for the battery..

Soundguy - I jumpered the field to ground and amp gage showed charge - picked up 2 volts on my volt meter. Unhooked belt gens spin when field ground and arm hooked to battery. Should I assumed problem is the regulator ?

finish the test... when hooked up and running nad you full field.. then also bypass cutout and see if bat voltage comes up over 6.3 ( more like 7.2 at high idle )
