Solenoid on my "50 sidemount has apparently failed. It cranks and starts easily when jumped around with my channellocks, but will not crank with the starter button nor when the small post is grounded. This is the first time I have ever had a solenoid fail - even hammered it a bit when small post grounded, but no response - weird. Am I missing something????

Gotcha. It shows that very well.

I was thinking of how the N solenoids are wired and even though they are

a bit different there, the internal mechanisms are similar and theory/function

are the same.

What type of tractor was that on?

The grounds indicated in the pictures and the "pos from key" don't look right for a stock Jubilee (guessing by your handle)

Royse,
you are correct on both accounts, not off a NAA nor N...hell - trying to remember where I got it from.....point was to show the inside of the sucker to see the points.....where things go wrong

I had one fail not to long ago, cut it apart - found that the contacts were cooked.....much like points.

I seem to replace a lot of them, but not for failure.

Mostly due to a home-brew wiring job that made things work.

I have one on an 8N now that I'll be replacing.

Starts right up with the car type ignition key, so the solenoid is good!

Only way to shut it off is to shut the fuel off and let it run out or choke it to death.

Push button is there, but isn't even wired up.

All part of the fun! :)

The only thing more shocking is a condenser failure.

W/ 4 8N's in the past 13 years, I've had one condenser failure & one solenoid "failure" that was really a striped stud. I'll cut it down one of these days w/ a die.

I had a condenser failure on our 861 one winter - stopped dead in the middle of a snowbank. Took the new points set and condenser down to change out, and got a little antsy about dropping one of the points screws in the snow - never to be found again - so I just put in a new condenser and tried it with the existing points - fired right up and ran fine - never would have believed it! Of course in replacing the condenser, I might have eliminated a short somewhere - didn't have my multimeter with me, so couldn't check, but there was no obvious short before the changeout.

in the last 10ys.. I've bought a few machines with bad solenoids.. but had none of my replacements or other older ones fail. had a few bad starter switches though.. have yet to have a condensor failure.. though did replace the lil terminal end on one that broke off.. :)

I got my 51 8N about 2002. It had the OEM wiring; all frayed, cracked, etc. The wires attached to the OEM ignition switch were just as bad.

I replaced all the wiring, including the ignition switch. (which I put in the 'used parts' box)

3 or 4 years later, the NEW ignition switch failed.

I taped the frayed wires on the OEM switch & put it back on the tractor.
