Just disassembled my first Ford 8N as a restoration project. I notided that the valve guides, when removed, had no seals on them. Is this common in 8N's? There are rotating exhaust valves & the valve guides are one piece. Thanks. |

| What sleeves are in it? That's what I'd put back in it if possible.
If they're .040's you could later bore it for .090's if needed.
As far as the rings, I have heard that the 3 ring pistons produce less friction
and therefore create less heat and have less chance of pushing a sleeve.
All just things I've heard here on this board. |

| | Thanks for all your help. I appreciate it. It"s getting close to time for me to make a decision on engine rebuild kits. First, what thickness of sleeves do you all recommend? Second, which pistons should I go with, 3 or 4 ring? (I heard the 4 ring runs a little hot) |

| If I remember right the seals are a rubber ring around middle of the outside of the intake guides, sealing the guide to the engine block. There may be an o-ring under the spring keepers but no other valve stem seals as are common on OHV type engines. |

| The exhaust valves don't need seals because there is no suction (like the intake valves) trying to pull the oil up past the guide. If you are running a muffler, there is enough back pressure that the oil won't work it's way up past the guides. Even with no muffler, ther isn't suction in the exhaust. |
