I have a 1950 8N. 6 volt, positive ground with stock generator. If I disconnect the battery terminals - is it neccessary to excite the generator in order for system to charge properly ? Thanks. |

| | if your regulator is working properly, EVERY time you shut the tractor down. and i do mean EVERY TIME you shut the tractor down, the CUTOUT opens. that meanns the battery is disconnected from the generator armature. EVERY time. do you have to repolarize your genny every time you start up? same answer as to your question. |

| I don't find it necessary every time.
More likely to be needed if it is left disconnected for a long time
or if it gets polarized the opposite direction.
Just a quick touch of the battery to arm (gen) terminals on the voltage
regulator, all hooked up, key off. Assuming a type A generator.
There will be a small spark. |
