After 2 years of rebuilding my 1950 8N (basically no engine work), I now have a problem with the carberator. Prior to breaking the tractor down it ran just fine. Now (the first time I reinstalled the hood and hooked up the gas line) after just a couple of minutes gas starts almost pouring out of the carberator. In fact, when I disconnected the air breather tube some gas came out of it as well. Does this sound like a problem with the floats? If so is there anything that can be done to get them to work short of replacing them? I have removed the carberator and the gaskets are not bad. The gas seemed to be coming out of the back of it where the rod for the choke goes through the sidewall of the carberator. It was hard to tell though since there was so much gas.

I found the seat part of my replacement needle and seat had threads full length yet the seat I removed only had threads about 1/3 and thus didn"t fit. I used old seat and "dont you know it" it leaks AND of course the shut off valve doesn"t work right either. New shut off valve sitting on table awaiting install.

Had this problem with my 8N, the float had a crack in one of the soldered seams of the float and it was full of gas. As a temporary fix (had pastures to mow) I drilled a small hole in the float, drained it and patched the hole with silicone. Worked fine after that.

If the floats are bad, you will need new floats, as in......:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carburetor Float, Small Bowl - Small bowl carburetor Float for Marvel Schebler carbs (2 3\8 inches at widest point of outside edge of floats) used on 9N, 2N and 8N tractors AND used only on the following engines (yr): 134 CID (1953-1954) or 172 CID(1955-1957) gas engines on tractors: NAA, Jubilee, 501, 600, 620, 630, 640, 650, 660, 601, 611, 621, 631, 641, 651, 661, 671, 681, 700, 740, 750, 701, 741, 771, 800, 820, 840, 801, 811, 821, 841, 851, 861, 871, 881, 900, 950, 960, 901, 941, 951, 961, 971, 981, 2000. (Part No: 9N9550A) $11.8

AND if you are going to clean/overhaul the carb....you then need a carb kit to cover your TSX# of carb!!!!

As in this kit.........: Comprehensive kit .....Part #C546V...Carb repair kit..for the M/S TSX carbs.!!

Would also advise you, NOT replacing the carb Jets, as if you do and do not know how to take them out, with-out breaking them!!!???

If the carb was working before this problem arose...the jets will NOT need to be replaced!!! JMHO

Gary

jm;

You have the "classic' bad float needle and seat.....OR... the floats are sticking open and letting the carb flood.

Has the engine ever caughed or backfired through the carb????? If so, the floats may have been imploaded (sides caved in), or the floats may be full of fuel, letting them sit on the bottom of the bowl, and not closing the needle!!!

Think it may just be time for a cleaning/overhaul of the carb.!!!

Turn the fuel on.....let it run until the gas comes out the choke horn....turn the fuel off, remove the floats from the carb, and shake them next to yer ear. If you feel or hear sloshing......replace the floats with new ones.....

Ya have leaky floats.!!!!

Read this for setting the floats.......:

float is only part of the mechanism.. float pulls and pshes on a needle that lands in a seat. needle has to be good.. seat and gasket have to be good. float cannot leak or be heavy or hang up on carb wall.

check float for fuel logging by shaking it to hear / feel slosh.. or dipping it in a glass of hot watter looking for air bubbles escaping. if not heavy.. look for hangup / adjustment and the needle / seat. many times a bit of debris sets in the seat keeping the needle from sealing.

Thank you both for your answers. When I am ordering parts what exactly would you suggest ordering and replacing?
